Shortly before the release of Diablo 2 Resurrected, you can already watch all the brilliant cinematic videos in one go. Data miners have unearthed them. Even MeinMMO editor Jürgen Horn feels nostalgic despite not wanting to play Diablo 2 Resurrected at all.
What are the cinematics all about? Data miners have – after the first two cinematics were leaked – now also unearthed and released the remaining video cutscenes from the upcoming Diablo remake Diablo 2 Resurrected.
The somewhat lengthy videos show the story of Marius, a poor lunatic who tells a mysterious figure his story. He recounts his journey to the East, following an unknown “Wanderer” and witnessing horrific events.
Since the Diablo 2 remake also includes the expansion Lord of Destruction, we can also see the two very cool cinematics from the expansion at the end, in which the nasty Lord of Destruction plays tricks on a poor clan leader.
The complete selection of cinematics from the leak can be found dispersed in the following paragraphs.
Who is writing here? Jürgen Horn played the very first Diablo back in the 90s and beforehand had already played the demo, which only contained a first small dungeon, for weeks on end. Likewise, in 2000, he was similarly hooked on Diablo 2. The cinematics and especially the voice acting are still fresh in my mind, which is why the new cinematics completely blow me away.
Diablo 2 impresses in 2021 just like 21 years ago
This is how I felt while watching the videos: In the run-up to the release of Diablo 2 Resurrected, I was tasked with writing a news article about the cinematic leaks. I actually hadn’t been keeping an eye on the remaster of Diablo 2 at all, as I am – unlike many other gamers of my generation – not a fan of nostalgia.
I much prefer to play new, modern games rather than revisit old gems. They should rather rest peacefully in my memory and not be ruined by half-baked resurrection attempts in my perception.
But with Diablo 2 Resurrected, I might stray from my convictions, and it’s these damn cinematics that were simply incredibly good and, thanks to the post-processing, are just as good again today.
Just the sequence in the intro, where the screams of the insane echo through the corridors of the insane asylum and the shadowy figure enters the cell of Marius, who first retreats into a corner, whimpering hysterically, transported me back 21 years in just a few seconds.
After that, there are more cool cutscenes, which were the main reason I extensively played the game back then. A clear highlight is still the scene where Tyrael appears and duels the Lords of Hell. The design of the heavily armored, dark Archangel with the cool hood and “light tentacles” instead of wings impresses me as much today as it did back then.
Rarely have I experienced such intense feelings while simply watching videos as I did with these cinematics, and I literally “binged” them while going through the leaked cinematics for this article.
Thus my decision is made, even if I will surely regret it: I will give in to the hellish temptation and, whether I like it or not, get the damn Diablo 2 Resurrected. By the way, my face could just as well appear instead of Shang-Chi star Simu Liu in the new launch trailer for Diablo 2 Resurrected, as we have virtually the same backstory in Diablo 2.
