Apex Legends is starting the 12th season soon, and the new heroine Mad Maggie has what it takes to change everything. The resistance fighter has a range of skills that could completely turn the established meta on its head. Players are mostly excited about this, except for a few …
Who is it about? Mad Maggie is a freedom fighter who has been condemned by the “Establishment” to die in the Apex games for the entertainment of the audience. But the wild fighter refuses to be defeated and comes into the game with a range of new abilities that could blow away several of the current top tactics in the upcoming Season 12.
What can Maggie actually do? We recently found out exactly what Maggie can do and how her skills work. For instance, Maggie can run even faster with shotguns, she detects injured opponents through cover and throws explosive rounds that make the whole team move even faster.
Her most dangerous ability might be the “Brawler Drill.” With it, she can attach a kind of explosive charge to surfaces. The drill then penetrates the surface and releases a flame charge behind it. This, in turn, is a severe counter to some of the most effective meta tactics in the game.
How Mad Maggie blows up the meta in Season 12
What meta are we talking about? With Mad Maggie, a legend is especially hard countered. We’re talking about Gibraltar, affectionately called “Gibby.” The cozy tank can set up a large, impenetrable shield bubble.
This ability is essential for a number of effective tactics, which is why Gibby is practically a “must-pick” in every pro game. Entire teams could pull themselves back up and heal in the bubble when Gibby had set it up correctly.
However, when it became known that Maggie can penetrate cover, the community wondered if this also applies to Gibby’s shield. Some players were skeptical. Until Respawn recently released a trailer for Maggie’s skills and you can see exactly one scene where the brawler drill eats through a Gibby shield and grills poor Gibby (and his buddies) inside.
With her drill, Maggie can also effectively smoke out opponents hiding behind locked doors (also a popular tactic). And the fans of the defensive legend Rampart and her portable cover walls will have to adapt, as every cover will become a deadly trap when Maggie is on the move.

Why do so many players like it anyway? Generally, the tone in the community is still positive. Because it was foreseeable that Respawn had to change something about the “Gibby meta”. A nerf to Gibby’s shield would have severely restricted the legend, and Gibby mains were already worried about the patch notes for Season 12 and the future of their beloved hero.
Here are some voices from the reddit community:
- „Finally a Gibby bubble counter. But RIP Rampart’s walls. Or any walls.“
- „The bubble counter was necessary in the late game of a competitive round. When 8 teams are left, just imagine getting a complete reset [the whole team heals up] when multiple Maggies are roaming around.“
- „The Gibby meta is finally being challenged!“
- „This is a game changer!“
The only thing some players criticize is that with Maggie another legend comes into play with a “wall hack ability.” Almost every new hero seems to currently have such an ability. An annoyance, as not only many fans see it: More and more shooters are making “cheats” legal and selling them to you as special skills.
