The action-adventure with superheroes, Marvel’s Avengers, aims to provide content for years to come. But how is it financed? What can microtransactions unlock?
What is available for free in the game? Marvel’s Avengers will continue to receive content after its release. Important for players are new superheroes that will be unlocked for free.
At launch, the 5 heroes
- Iron Man
- Hulk
- Captain America
- Black Widow
- and Thor
are available.
Confirmed for a later release is also the character Ant-Man. Developer Crystal Dynamics stated that new superheroes will not require payment.

It is also clear that the game world in Marvel’s Avengers will be expanded with new regions after the launch. These new regions are, according to the developers, available for free.
What can you pay for? Eurogamer conducted an interview with two employees of Crystal Dynamics. Philippe Therien (Lead Designer) and Rose Hunt (Senior Producer).
The question was raised whether they would sell Iron Man skins to balance out the generous business model.
Philippe Therien responded: “We haven’t discussed what will be monetized yet. What’s important, however, is that new heroes or regions will not cost you anything when they are released.”
Rose Hunt adds: “We can say yes, you will be able to customize your hero with different skins and outfits. But this will never have any effect on gameplay. You will never find yourself in a situation where you have to pay to play.”
“We are also not doing loot boxes,” explains Therien.
There should also be further aesthetic customization options, like the Player Card. But none of this is supposed to influence gameplay.
How can characters be visually customized? Therien explains in the interview that outfits in Marvel’s Avengers can be customized. This way, they can appeal more to those who like the comic versions of the heroes. Others, who prefer the more current versions of the superheroes.
“There will be something for everyone, and there are many options to customize your heroes.”

Why are heroes and regions free? By selling new heroes or regions, the developers could generate revenue. But they do not want to go this route. The background is a social aspect:
” […] it is important for us to say this. We want to ensure that you can always play with your friends and jump in at any time.”
