A new RPG has launched on Steam with Lords of the Fallen. However, reviews are mixed already. Players say this is mainly due to the game not keeping several promises. Another problem is once again the weak performance.
The developers at Hexworks wanted to release a new Souls-like game with the action RPG “Lords of the Fallen”. Intense battles paired with a dark story and a strong multiplayer component.
On Steam, it is currently ranked number 1 among the bestsellers and in the category New and Trending
at least number 2 (as of October 14, 2023).
However, the first reviews on Steam are only mixed: At the current time (as of October 14, 2023), the ratings among more than 4,300 reviews sit at only 51% positive.
Poorly executed multiplayer and performance upset players
What are the biggest points of criticism? On one hand, many players complain about the mediocre performance of the action RPG. Sometimes the game crashes right after starting, while others report error messages during gameplay. Faulty menus and regular frame drops are also commonplace.
On the other hand, and this is what most players complain about, the multiplayer is said to be poorly conceived. Other players can only join the session as “guests” which leads to numerous problems:
- Upon death, the guest is not revived, unlike the host, who gets a second chance after dying. If the host dies, the game ends for the guest as well.
- There is no shared loot; both players access the same items.
- A guest cannot unlock achievements. This is reserved for the host of the game.
- Progress is only saved for the host and not for the guest.
Many particularly complain that the “Seamless Coop” that the developers advertised is simply not present in the game. The restrictions for the second player are just too great at this time.
Much praise for atmosphere and game design
Are there also positive voices? Yes, there are. Many players praise the design, as the game world consists of two vast parallel worlds that you must visit. The dark atmosphere is also praised by many. The combat system is said to require some getting used to, but it quickly becomes second nature.
Overall, many players believe that the game certainly deserves a chance if the current problems with performance and multiplayer can be resolved.
