The patch notes state: “From June 18 at 6 PM and for the rest of the Festival of FUTballs, we are introducing a new way to access Ultimate Team content: Preview Packs” (via EA Sports).
Currently, it looks like the preview variant will only remain until the end of the current event. This means it would only be available during this typical summer phase when the FIFA season is slowly ending before moving on to the next installment.
At the same time, however, some commentators also point out that there has been a lot of trouble regarding packs and the issue of “loot boxes” in FIFA 21 in the past.
Packs are often criticized as gambling that could cost players a lot of money. Some now see this preview mechanic as a kind of test that could hint at what a “disarmed” pack system in Ultimate Team could look like.

In FIFA 21 there is now a Pack Preview that allows you to see the contents of a pack before you buy it. Many players see the preview as a fundamental change to the Ultimate Team mode – and hope it plays a role in FIFA 22.
How does the Pack Preview work? Currently, in the packs within the Ultimate Team in-game shop, you find the “View Pack” button instead of the purchase button. When you click the new button, the familiar opening animation is played before the contents of the pack are presented to you.
Now you have two options: Either you buy the pack, or you choose not to. In the latter case, the pack remains available for a while – so if you still want it, you can grab it a bit later. At the same time, there’s a several-hour timer until a new pack appears that can be viewed in the preview.
If you buy the pack, you get all the contents immediately. Additionally, in this case, the preview timer disappears. This means: If you want, you can also immediately view the next pack.
Fans call it a great idea – but will it come to FIFA 22?
That’s why the preview is so important: Normally, opening a pack in the shop is pure gambling. You can use either the in-game currency “FUT Coins” earned in the game or the “FIFA Points” bought with real money to purchase packs.
However, there is no guarantee that anything worthwhile is in the pack. On the contrary: The chances of getting top players in FIFA 21 packs are rather low. Therefore, it can happen that you buy a pack for hard-earned 100,000 coins or even real money but get hardly anything useful in return.
With the preview, this risk is largely removed. It may still happen that nothing useful is in the pack – but now you can see that beforehand. After checking the pack, you can still decide to leave the pack alone and check again later to see if there’s something useful. If there are strong and valuable cards in the pack that are worth the coins, you can make a purchase.
