The Alien series has produced several games, and now a co-op shooter called “Aliens: Fireteam” will join them. The trailer shows plenty of aliens and explosions, but some fans are left feeling skeptical.
This is shown in the trailer: Aliens: Fireteam is based on the film series that director Ridley Scott started in 1979 with the horror science fiction film “Alien”. The title creature is, of course, represented in the trailer – and in various forms.
After a brief introduction, where a three-person team sneaks through a dark room with flashlights and one of the monsters is briefly seen crawling on the wall, the trailer switches to “Action”.
The aliens attack the trio in packs, running wildly through rooms and screaming terrifyingly. The attacked humans defend themselves with a lot of bullets, flamethrowers, or grenades.
This is Alien: Fireteam: The developers from “Cold Iron Studios” present the game on the official website as a cooperative third-person shooter. You are part of a “Fireteam” of Colonial Marines who are supposed to confront the Xenomorph threat. The story is said to connect 23 years after the original trilogy. There are to be more than 20 enemy types, including 11 different Xenomorph types.
Your own team relies on 5 classes – Gunner, Demolisher, Technician, Doc, and Recon – each bringing their own abilities. There are to be more than 30 weapons and over 70 customization options.
The release is planned for summer 2021. It is to be released on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
Players Fear Colonial Marines
This is what the community says: If you look at the feedback on the trailer at IGN, you see a positive ratio for the likes. There are 15,077 thumbs up compared to 471 negative feedbacks.
In the comments, however, some voices express skepticism. The reason: The game “Aliens: Colonial Marines,” which was released in 2013. It was developed by Gearbox and also impressed with a promising trailer – but the positive aspects largely ended there.
Colonial Marines turned out to be an uninspired shooter that did not do justice to the horror aspects of the original. There was criticism at the time regarding the AI, the story, and the graphics. In a review by GameStar, Colonial Marines also received a rather poor rating in 2013 (via GameStar).
And this is exactly where fans fear a repetition of past mistakes – and express this, for example, in the comments of the trailer at IGN:
- “Don’t be like Colonial Marines. Make this one right,” wishes a user (via YouTube).
- “Hope this isn’t like Colonial Marines” (via YouTube).
- “8 years later and we all still have Colonial Marines fresh in our minds” (via YouTube).
A similar picture emerges in the comments under the official trailer on Fireteam’s own channel. Some users criticize the hordes of aliens and wish for a game more in the style of “Alien: Isolation,” which was released in 2014 and focused on horror elements. However, there are also positive voices who emphasize that the shooter could be a fun affair, especially in co-op.
In which direction the new game from the developers at Cold Iron Studios will go remains to be seen in the coming months.
Generally, Fortnite is likely far from the foundational mood of the Alien film series. But right there, a crossover with Alien is currently taking place – including a special Alien glider.
