The loot shooter The First Descendant has announced the date for an open beta as part of the gamescom 2023.
What kind of game is this?
- The First Descendant is an upcoming loot shooter from the Korean developer studio Nexon, set to release as a free-to-play title on Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
- Gameplay takes place in a sci-fi setting where players must combat nasty alien beings.
- There are various classes, each with special abilities, 4-player co-op, and crossplay across all platforms.
- The First Descendant uses Unreal Engine 5 and is played from a third-person perspective.
What is The First Descendant about? In The First Descendant, you take on the role of the so-called “Descendants.” These descendants have special abilities.
In an earlier trailer, we learn that humanity emerged as losers from a battle against intruders from another world. These evil aliens are called Vulgus and sacrificed humans or conducted experiments on them.
Humans fought to the death, but the invaders were still able to destroy everything. Eventually, the humans found power in ancient ruins to launch a counterattack and finally put up resistance.

What similarities are there to Destiny? In general, the gameplay of the loot shooter, despite being third-person, reminds one of Destiny or other genre representatives like Warframe or Outriders: You choose a class, equip yourself with sci-fi-like firearms and powerful abilities, and fight evil aliens in futuristic suits.
In a 2022 trailer, many fans recognized a resemblance and referred to The First Descendant as a baby of Destiny and Warframe.
We summarize the similarities:
- Sci-fi setting
- Story with evil aliens
- Shooter gameplay
- Classes with different abilities
- Co-op gameplay with raids and boss fights
- Loot and materials as rewards for completing missions and winning boss fights
Additionally, there is something that strongly resembles a ghost from Destiny:
