Are you looking for a new online role-playing game that is still fun even if you have little time or are not very familiar with the genre? Then Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff, which launched on Steam, might appeal to you.
What kind of game is Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff? The online role-playing game, successfully funded through Kickstarter earlier this year, aims to open up the genre to more players. It’s said that “anyone can grab a controller, join in, and have fun.”
This means you can expect a more casual gameplay experience that isn’t strictly aimed at RPG experts. At the beginning, you don’t have to spend a lot of time on character creation. You just decide on your appearance and your name, and then you’re off.
After that, you’ll find yourself in a colorful, cute fantasy world that you can explore freely.
Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff is therefore ideal for all beginners who want to try an online RPG. However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges. Fights can be tough in this game, and especially at the beginning, you should take it slow and not challenge every monster right away. Moreover, you’ll have to figure out a lot of things on your own; there is no real tutorial. But that’s part of the fun.
Many freedoms in a colorful fantasy world
What are your tasks in the game? Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff does not hold your hand. There are quests that operate differently than what you are used to from regular MMORPGs or single-player RPGs.
For quests, you don’t talk to NPCs; instead, you find clues in the world that lead you to more clues. This creates a small adventure with a story.
Cooperation with friends is of the highest priority. Together, you explore the world, battle monsters there, or find treasures. This way, you obtain new items to improve your hero.
In addition, your character gets stronger by frequently using weapons and items. Your skills increase through usage and not by distributing points.
What does the Early Access version offer? The cooperative RPG is still in the Early Access phase. You can join for 16.79 euros via Steam.
This phase does not yet include all the features planned for Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff. However, the following is possible:
- A large zone to explore
- Character creation
- Melee and ranged combat
- Dual-wielding and shields
- Quests
- Shops
- Banking
- Factions you can join
- Mounts
- Online coop with friends
- PvP duels
- Mining
- Chopping trees
- Upgrading weapons
- Gliding
A forthcoming patch is set to introduce housing and crafting. When that will happen is still uncertain.
How is Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff received? On Steam, the current rating is 85%, and it is positive. The catchy game is praised for being straightforward and fun.
- tkiljoyflameheart writes on Steam: “I felt that although the game is in an early stage, it is definitely worth the price. The music is beautiful, and after playing all day, I can say that while there are things that need fixing, the game is great and easy to play.”
- Roamer says: “I had a lot of fun playing this game. I can’t wait to see how it progresses through Early Access and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys open world RPGs, especially if you like playing with friends.”
- Iron Zerg explains that despite its casual approach, it’s not suitable for younger children: “Overall, the game looks cute but is not very fun at the moment. It’s hard. If it’s aimed at a more casual audience and wants to attract younger adventurers, there is still a lot to do.”
