Since August 5th, a new co-op game is available on Steam in Early Access: Death Trash. It has excellent reviews – but very few players. A true hidden gem?
What kind of game is this? Death Trash is a new action RPG where you fight various horror creatures in a rather bizarre world, inspired by post-apocalypse and cyberpunk. The game features a retro pixel art style.
After humans settled on distant planets, ancient life stirred on one of their new homes. The ancient threat now endangers humanity there, which has retreated into the cities. You are one of the outcasts who has remained in the wasteland alongside “worm-grown” and destructive machines.
Features include:
- Real-time gameplay with melee and ranged weapons
- Stealth gameplay and sneaking
- Dialogs with NPCs and various choices
- Crafting
- Abilities like pickpocketing and… vomiting
While the focus of the game is on the single-player campaign, it also offers a co-op mode. The playtime is currently estimated to be around 10 hours. Death Trash is developed by the German indie developer Crafting Legends. It was released on August 5th in Early Access on Steam and is also available on the Epic Games Store, Good old Games, and via itch.io.
Death Trash is received so well: Currently, Death Trash has a rating of “Very Positive” on Steam with 96% positive votes from 959 reviews (via Steam). In the reviews, Death Trash is often compared to Fallout 1 and 2, the first parts of the popular series. The colleagues at GameStar praised the “German Fallout” in their review (via GameStar.de).
Players particularly praise the quirky humor and the many possibilities that can be exploited despite the short playtime. Additional content is likely to follow.
Death Trash runs under the radar despite top ratings
How many players does Death Trash have? At the moment, Death Trash averages 344 players and peaks at 939 players (via steamcharts.com). The game is thus a real hidden gem and a “jewel” as some of the enthusiastic players call it.
The likelihood is high that you are not yet familiar with the game – but you should probably take a look if you are looking for a strong co-op experience.
How does the co-op mode work? When you play together with a friend, you experience the full campaign in co-op. Each player has their own inventory and character with stats, but progress in quests is shared.
Even dialogs with NPCs and other actions are executed separately and do not disturb each other. Death Trash works only in local co-op with split-screen or shared screen or via Steam Remote Play Together.

Online co-op is not currently planned. The developers themselves say that the team is too small to think about it right now. Death Trash is still in Early Access and is being actively developed. We will see what time brings.
