Wild Woods is a cute coop game featuring cats driving their vehicle through the woods and defending it from enemies. We at MeinMMO had the opportunity to test it at gamescom 2022.
Originally, Wild Woods was a university project by a few students, and today it has a spot at gamescom. The development group is called Octofox Games.
Up to 4 players can play simultaneously – either in local coop or over the internet. Everyone grabs a controller, selects their favorite cat, and the fun can begin.

What kind of game is this? You find yourselves in the forest and must work together to advance your wagon, which is pulled by a ram named Rosi. Chop wood and throw it into the vehicle’s oven so Rosi can speed up. To heal, you collect flowers because watch out: there are also enemies.
With a mundane sword, your cats beat on rabbits that want to attack you. You can strike, but otherwise have no abilities. With another button, you can dodge attacks. You won’t have to hit many more buttons.
The third and final button lets you throw collected items. This way, you can toss gold into your vehicle or throw materials to each other and create a tactical chain.

The simple design of the game is intentional, say the developers. They want to create a straightforward yet entertaining experience that brings joy to all age groups. This way, children can play together with their parents or a few friends can have a fun evening.
To ensure no one gets bored, you can at least choose from 3 difficulty levels. The game takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, the developers explain.
The demo at gamescom ends with a fight against a bear-like creature – the first boss in Wild Woods. Meanwhile, Rosi patiently parks at the edge of the scene, allowing the cats to beat up the enemy.

When will the game be released? On the Steam page, it currently still says “Coming Soon,” but the developers tell us they are planning a release for 2023. Wild Woods will first be released in Early Access for PC. A later release for consoles is also conceivable, with the developers particularly eyeing the Nintendo Switch.
