There is good news for all fans of Dungeons & Dragons or also Baldur’s Gate 3, which is based on it. Because there is a new game in the works set in the D&D universe.
What kind of game is it? We are talking about a game with the code name “Project Baxter”. Developer and publisher “Starbreeze” has secured the licenses to the role-playing classic Dungeons & Dragons for this.
D&D is currently distributed by the company “Wizards of the Coast”, which in turn belongs to Hasbro. Wizards of the Coast is also well known for the internationally successful trading card game Magic: The Gathering.

Dungeons & Dragons, but with a lot of action
Content-wise, it is already known that it is supposed to be an action-packed co-op multiplayer game set in the world of D&D. The exact setting is said to be the city of Waterdeep. This is the largest and most influential city in the northern part of Faerûn, a continent in the D&D world.
“The game will be heavily inspired by D&D, but there will be no dice rolling. It will not be turn-based. It will be an action-oriented experience,” reveals “Creative Director” Leif Westerholm in an interview with Gamesbeat.
The project is set to be realized in Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to be released in 2026 on all major platforms. Cross-play is to be possible.
A perfect match?
“It is hard to imagine a better pair than Dungeons & Dragons and Starbreeze,” says the studio’s CEO, Tobis Sjögren (via Gamesbeat).
The Swedish development studio is mainly active in the first-person shooter sector and frequently collaborates on fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping games. Probably the most well-known among them is the co-op shooter Payday 3. Their latest title is “Roboquest”, a fast-paced FPS roguelite filled with deadly robots.
When you hear “shooter” and “robots”, you probably don’t think of Dungeons & Dragons. However, the connecting element here is supposed to be the focus on cooperative gameplay and community-driven experiences. “Play the way you want” is the motto, along with a high replay value.
“When we were looking for new IPs for our future projects, Dungeons & Dragons was always at the top of the list,” explains Sjögren.
Eugene Evans, “SVP Digital Strategy and Licensing” at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, is also looking forward to the collaboration: “Given their impressive games and passion for Dungeons & Dragons, we are confident that they will create a great experience for fans worldwide”.
The approach to implement D&D in an action-packed game sounds definitely very interesting. Especially players who couldn’t get into the turn-based combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 might find a welcome alternative here. But many fans of the successful role-playing game are surely looking forward to further adventures in the fantastical world.
