A new cinematic in World of Warcraft gives hints about how The War Within continues. We probably won’t stay on Azeroth.
For several hours now, the new raid “The Liberation of Lorenhall” has been live in World of Warcraft, along with the World First Race. It took only a few hours for the first groups to take down the final boss Gallywix. This not only unlocks the last chapters of the story, but also rewards players with a new video at the end – which reveals how the journey of World of Warcraft continues.

What can we see in the cinematic? The cinematic shows how things progress in Lorenhall after the fall of Gallywix. Gazlowe reconsiders the city and comes to the conclusion that he must take responsibility himself. Together with the other leaders of the cartels, he addresses the future of Lorenhall – equally with the others.
After this sequence, we encounter the Void. We see a void-altered Ethereal holding the Heart of Darkness, the weapon of Xal’atath, in its hands. In the background, there is a large purple vortex which most likely shows the remnants of a planet. But see for yourself:
So where do we go next? The last seconds of the video make it quite clear that the next stop on the journey is likely the homeworld of the Ethereals – K’aresh. Similar to back then on Argus (“Legion”), not much might be left of this planet, after all it was destroyed by the Void, which led to the creation of the Ethereals – because they were previously physical beings altered by magic.
K’aresh was destroyed by the Void Lord Dimensius. By the way, this is the same Void Lord who also appointed Xal’atath as his herald – the puzzle pieces are coming together. We have the entire story of Xal’atath here for you.
This also probably confirms the leak that already appeared in the beta of “The War Within”. Some file names back then suggested that there would be a raid focused on the Ethereals. As Patch 11.2 will also introduce a new area, the next travel destination now seems to be set in stone.
Why we are traveling to K’aresh will likely be explained in a quest line that probably won’t be introduced until Patch 11.1.5 or 11.1.7.
What can be concluded from the cinematic? The video suggests that the Ethereals and Xal’atath – contrary to initial assumptions – do not cooperate at all. The Heart of Darkness seems to have fallen into the hands of someone who is not necessarily favorable towards Xal’atath. Xal’atath actually wanted Gallywix to repair the Heart of Darkness. That was successful, but then the Heart was taken away by the Ethereals.
How it continues will probably be revealed to us in a few weeks. Because while Patch 11.1 has only just launched for us, Blizzard is already internally testing the next three patches. So the development is advancing rapidly.
