In League of Legends the patch 12.11 goes live. It brings a new champion, the jungler Bel’Veth, to LoL. At Riot, they are now showing their cards and revealing which ability of the “Empress of the Void” sounded incredibly cool but would have messed up the whole game.
This is the situation:
- In LoL, the patch 12.11 goes live. It will mainly be a balance patch. We presented on MeinMMO how around 30 champions in LoL will change in detail with the update.
- Especially exciting: The patch brings a new jungler to League of Legends, Bel’Veth, a Void queen.
- Riot Games has now explained which ability of hers sounded incredibly cool during the design process but ultimately didn’t make it into the game.
This is how Bel’Veth is intended: As Ryan “Reave3” Mireles, the “father of Bel’Veth,” reveals, they wanted to create a kind of female counterpart to Renekton, Nasus, or Rengar. A “monstrous humanoid woman.” Something like that was still missing in League of Legends.
Ultimately, however, the concept transformed, as always, and a hero emerged that is designed in the spirit of the “Void”.
The idea is that “the Void” devours creatures and then assembles new creatures from these parts. Therefore, Bel’Veth is a fusion of many humans and animals, and other sea creatures that she found in the harbor of a city.
This concept of devouring is also reflected in her current ultimate.
By the way, it was Mireles who explained in April which 3 champions will come to LoL next.
Bel’Veth could have moved freely across the map while she was dead
What was the overly powerful ability? Mireles says:
“At one point in development, Bel’Veth simply would never have died again. If she was killed, she would jump into the Void.”
The idea was that Bel’Veth,
- could move freely across the map during the entire time she was dead and “interact a bit” with other players – thanks to her abilities
- during that time, friends and enemies would have only perceived her as a “small, purple glowing ball”
- but once the death timer expired, Bel’Veth would return to the spot on the map where she was.
So why is this not happening now? Mireles says that unfortunately, LoL players will never see this “crazy and fantastic ability”. Because the skill would have led to a lot of problems in gameplay.
In LoL, champions change over time, but hardly anyone so drastically as he here:
No one wanted to play the most unpopular champ in the history of LoL, even if he won every match
