The new head of Diablo 4 has been able to take a look at the game archives for the first time. The works of the artists have apparently deeply impressed him, even though he should be quite tough himself.
Who is the new head? Since March 2020, Rod Fergusson is the new head of the entire Diablo franchise at Blizzard and thus also of the upcoming Diablo 4. Fergusson himself is regarded as a “Closer,” someone who finishes games.
In the past, Fergusson has worked on:
- Unreal Tournament 3
- BioShock Infinite
- Shadow Complex
- Gears 5 and other “Gears of War” titles
He announced his move from The Coalition (Gears of War) to Blizzard in February. On March 1, he worked at Blizzard for the first time and on March 2, he saw the Diablo archives for the first time.
Fergusson finds Diablo 4 art “disturbing”
This is what Fergusson says about Diablo 4: In a tweet, Fergusson shared his impressions of his new job for the first time. He claimed to have seen the archives and praises the work of the artists. It is great, but also “the stuff of nightmares.”
He writes: “I got access to the art archive of Diablo 4 today and OMG, there are so many beautiful, albeit disturbing images there.”
However, he did not attach an image as an example, or it was removed again, as he hinted.
Why is this so special? Fergusson is actually accustomed to brutal images from his work on Gears of War. In the Gears series, it is common to saw enemies in half with a chainsaw.
In Diablo 3, fans criticized that the game had become too colorful, no longer dark and grim like Diablo was supposed to be. Diablo 4 is supposed to be darker again – apparently so dark that even a splatter veteran is impressed.
What is the status of Diablo 4?
After part of the community saw little future for Diablo 4, especially after the incident with Diablo Immortal, the mood seems to be improving again. A fan on Twitter even writes: “Rod the god, here to save another franchise.”
Indeed, Fergusson has already helped many games to success. BioShock Infinite sold over 11 million copies in just two years after release and was highly rated. Fans are now hoping for the same success for Diablo 4.
When exactly the new ARPG will be released is still uncertain. However, Blizzard is currently working on several Diablo projects simultaneously. What we know about the release, we have compiled here:
