The MMORPG Elyon will be released on October 20 on Steam and has been seen as the successor to TERA . After all, the same development studio worked on it. However, while over 15,000 players logged in simultaneously at launch, today it barely reaches the mark of 400 – and thus fewer than TERA itself. Moreover, there is now bad news beyond the player counts.
What kind of game is this? Elyon is a Free2Play MMORPG that immerses you in a steampunk world. Here, you can choose from now 7 different classes to complete quests and explore the world.
- The highlight of the MMORPG is the action-packed combat system, which resembles a mix of TERA and Black Desert.
- Additionally, it features a special skill system that allows you to completely change a skill to match your play style.
- In the endgame, you can run dungeons and record yourself on leaderboards or participate in PvP. This takes place in the open world and in massive 100v100v100 battles.
However, despite the good combat system and some fresh ideas with the skills, Elyon could not establish itself. Following the news of the past weeks and the current player numbers, it seems likely that the MMORPG could be shut down in 2022.
Elyon struggles with criticism and weak player counts
How was the launch of Elyon? Even before the release, there was criticism of the MMORPG. On one hand, the shop offered some strong bonuses, including XP scrolls, attribute boxes, and two buffs that provide bonuses like higher drop rates.
On the other hand, the MMORPG felt soulless. We at MeinMMO also criticized this in our preview report:
At launch, the MMORPG recorded “only” 15,500 simultaneous players, placing it far behind New World, which had just been released a few weeks earlier. That game hit over 900,000 simultaneous players on Steam at its peak.
The reviews were also more negative. Only 48% of reviews on Steam were positive at release.
Where does Elyon stand today? Elyon has received several updates in recent months, including the new class Archer (via YouTube), a Battle Pass, and new events for the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day.
However, the changes did not bring about a turnaround. In the last 24 hours, only 428 players were online at peak times. That is only about 2.6% of the players who were there at launch. The developers are already responding by merging the two European servers into one.
Moreover, they have now communicated that support for the Spanish language will be disabled. This applies to both news on the website and translations in-game (via Elyon). However, support for German, French, and English will be maintained for now.
Elyon could die as early as 2022
What does the future of the game look like? Elyon has been running a bit longer in Korea, but it has not achieved great success there either. Already four months after release, the MMORPG fell out of the top 50 of the online gaming charts and merged all servers into one in July 2021.
Meanwhile, TERA, an MMORPG from the same developer, has more players on Steam (via SteamDB). However, TERA was released 11 years ago and has its own clients for the EU and NA versions. Thus, the total player count of TERA is likely significantly higher than that of Elyon.
