The fantasy MMO Neverwinter is auctioning a strictly limited pet and hopes that players will bid against each other.
What are the super-rich supposed to buy with their money and how do you take the in-game currency away from them? In Neverwinter, they have come up with something: They are auctioning the pet edition of Sergeant Knox, a prominent NPC.
The catch: There will only be five of them. This means only five players will be able to acquire him and secure his services. This ensures that the wealthy will have to dip into their reserves, as massively suspected. Because no matter how rich you are, how much you ultimately have to spend for this privilege, it is determined by the other super-rich on the server.
The auction starts on Thursday, September 11, at 7 PM. It ends on Sunday, December 14, at the same time. Similar experiments to extract currency from the game by having players bid against each other for prestige items have been undertaken by Blizzard, including the black market auction house in World of Warcraft.
