Indie developer Donkey Crew presented a new gameplay trailer for the survival MMO Last Oasis at E3 and announced the release date for the Early Access version.
What is Last Oasis? It is a survival MMO where you flee from the sun. In the future, our Earth no longer rotates, resulting in only a small habitable zone remaining. Where the sun shines, no life can exist anymore.
The habitable zone of our once blue planet is slowly changing. The last surviving humans have become nomads, fleeing from the sun with wooden vehicles called Walkers, while gathering as many resources as possible along the way.
Clans wage wars with moving fortresses against each other to harvest the few remaining resources. What that looks like is shown in the new gameplay trailer from E3:
A Race Against the Sun
How does Last Oasis play? It is a survival game where PvP is important. You are either on foot or building your own Walker. These can even become something like moving fortresses from which clans operate. At oases, you gather resources to survive and to keep upgrading your Walker. Other players do the same, which leads to frequent skirmishes. Walkers collide with each other.
You must always keep an eye on the sun because the “death zone” is approaching relentlessly, so you should not linger too long in one place, as the heat will kill you. Thus, a constant “moving” war over the last resources on Earth ensues.
What does this remind you of? The concept of moving cities is somewhat reminiscent of Philip Reeve’s “Mortal Engines” book series. The first book was adapted into a film directed by Peter Jackson in 2018.
When can you play? The survival MMO Last Oasis will enter Early Access on September 3rd on Steam.
The price of the game has not yet been announced.
The Team Has Learned from Mistakes
Why are players currently a bit skeptical? There is a noticeable skepticism in the community. This is despite Last Oasis looking very good and generally being well received by players.
The problem is that the developers worked on a battle game called Of Kings and Men (OKAM) about two years ago. The title was even available on Steam during Early Access. It is no longer available, and supporters feel cheated.
However, the developers explain that they ceded the rights to the game to another company which promised them financial support in developing OKAM. But essentially, the team worked in vain. Eventually, work was halted, damaging the studio’s reputation.
Now, the team aims to prove with Last Oasis that they are not to blame for the troubles surrounding OKAM and can release a good game.
