A team consisting of former developers of EVE Online and Max Payne has founded a new studio. It aims to create a cloud-based, social MMO.
Who are the developers? Behind the new studio Mainframe Industries is a team led by Thor Gunnarsson. Gunnarsson was previously the Vice President at CCP Games. He gathered a group of former EVE Online developers and employees from Remedy to develop new MMOs that utilize Cloud Gaming.
An MMO that you can play anywhere
What is the first project? Mainframe Industries sees itself as a developer studio for MMOs. Accordingly, the first project is also an online game.
Thor Gunnarsson is keeping much under wraps for now. However, it is a very ambitious game. The project will utilize cloud technology. This makes it possible for you to play the title on virtually any device. Whether on a PC, a console, a smart TV, or a mobile phone, you simply start the title and get going.
What is special about it? Mainframe wants to encourage players to engage with their MMO through everyday surfing on the internet. To do this, the entry barrier should be as low as possible.
You see an advertisement for the game while surfing, click on it, and you’re off. Whether on PC, via 5G on your phone, a smart TV, or a console.
What kind of game will this be? The developers are being very tight-lipped about details. What is certain is that it will be a sandbox MMO. The social aspect is at the forefront. They plan to develop a AAA game. Furthermore, they want to bring fresh air to the genre with this title. It should be something innovative that also presents many challenges for the players.
The cloud technology is expected to offer larger worlds, physical simulations, better AI, and generally a new gaming experience.
Will it be like EVE Online?
What can we expect? Given the background of the team, it is likely that the new title could resemble EVE Online. However, whether it will be set in a science fiction scenario or fantasy is currently unclear.
How is the game financed? Mainframe has so far received 2 million euros in funding from investors, including Maki.vc, Play Ventures, Crowberry Capital, and Sisu Game Ventures.
Samuli Syvähuoko from Sisu Game Ventures says: “What motivated me to join this adventure is the team’s passion for pushing the known boundaries for games and going beyond everything we’ve seen so far.”
When can we expect the release? There is currently no date. Development is still in its early stages, so we’ll probably have to wait a few more years.
