With the summer start of 2018, Pokémon GO is really gaining momentum and is already shining with strong player numbers.
So many players as never before: According to a report from Superdata, the player numbers of Pokémon GO are extremely high again. They are said to have reached the highest level since the record numbers in the summer of 2016.
Pokémon GO – Yes, someone still plays it
May was busy: The launch of Pokémon GO in the summer of 2016 was outstanding. The game was downloaded over 50 million times in its first week. In May 2018, things are heating up again. There are no exact numbers, but after the record summer of 2016, this is said to be the highest number of players in Pokémon GO so far. This is reported by the market research company Superdata in their report for May 2018
Server issues in the summer: In the summer of 2016, Pokémon GO suffered from many problems. Servers couldn’t handle the high number of users because no one expected such a large influx of players. Furthermore, Pokémon GO was quite different back then than it is today. Now there are raids, regular events, friends, and trading. In the summer of 2016, the biggest topic was that the footprints were removed from the game, which helped in tracking wild monsters.
New features bring players back: In raids, Pokémon GO players can catch legendary monsters after battling them. There are daily tasks to complete, as the field and special research are the quest system in Pokémon GO. This provides an incentive to visit a PokéStop or a gym again. As a reward for special research, players can get the mystical Pokémon Mew.
Just a few days ago, Niantic released the trading and friends features in Pokémon GO. Players can now add other trainers as friends, send gifts to each other, and even receive bonuses during raids for their friendships. Trainers have been wishing for such a feature for a long time. However, there was even more hope for a way to trade monsters. This possibility was combined with the friends system.
Many trainers have a reason to dip back into Pokémon GO. But the new features are not everything. An important aspect is also the start of summer, which now attracts many players outdoors again. In the colder seasons, the motivation to go outside is lower for many players.
Regular events: To ensure that players do not get bored in Pokémon GO, developer Niantic regularly launches new events.
- Recently, the Water Festival brought Shiny Kyogre
- Every month, a Community Day starts with shiny monsters and special attacks – In July, the Community Day features Squirtle
- At the end of June, a Safari Zone in Dortmund starts, where thousands of trainers are expected – there will also be global challenges
This all shows how much Pokémon GO has changed since its release. A reason for many players to rejoin or to start with the mobile game now. The player numbers validate Niantic and their philosophy.
The field research in July brings a special Snorlax and Ditto to Pokémon GO
