In one of his videos, Marco Risch from Nerdkultur talks about the popular film series “Die Hard” or rather about the film with Bruce Willis, which could actually be the best Die Hard
film, even though it is not named that.
Who is Marco Risch? Marco Risch has been uploading videos with news, reviews, analyses, and interviews on current films, series, and video games on his YouTube channel Nerdkultur since 2015.
In his podcast Nerd & Kultur, he chats every Sunday with his colleague Yves Arievich about topics like Star Wars, Marvel, and DC. With both, he is part of the Webedia network, of which MeinMMO is also a part.
In this video, he now talks about a film that was theoretically supposed to be Die Hard
and how it is even responsible for the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe):
Which film is it about? In his video, Marco talks about the film “The Last Boy Scout,” which in German has the subtitle “The Goal is to Survive.” However, this film was originally supposed to have a completely different title.
As Marco reveals, the script was originally titled “Die Hard,” which is the English title of the actual Die Hard
films. The script came from the creative mind of Shane Black, who made his breakthrough primarily with “Lethal Weapon.”
His scripts seem to work well mainly because he likes to use classic motifs from detective stories and combines two completely different characters – at least one of whom has a death wish. Additionally, there is his quirky obsession with holidays and swimming pools, lively dialogues, and catchy one-liners that Black is now known for.
The idea for Die Hard originated from his self-doubt
In his video, Marco also talks about the life of Shane Black, which was largely defined by self-doubt for a long time. This was reinforced among other things by Warner Bros., who found his script for “Lethal Weapon” too dark, ultimately reworked it, and only left him with credits.
At this point, the idea for Die Hard reportedly already existed, but it was still a long way from being implemented. Instead, he was asked by Joel Silver to borrow the title “Die Hard” for a project. The project was an adaptation of the novel “Nothing Lasts Forever,” which was supposed to make the rising newcomer and comedy actor Bruce Willis an action star.
In his video, Marco discusses the collaboration between Shane Black and Joel Silver and how “The Last Boy Scout” was created under their leadership. Marco explains that several of Black’s ideas were removed again in this film. And this seems to be noticeable in the film.
Finally, Marco talks about further successes of Shane Black, how he brought Hollywood favorite Robert Downey Jr. back with his film “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and worked on Iron Man.
