The choice of class and specialization significantly determines how the game feels in WoW: Shadowlands. Some prefer melee, while others prefer ranged. However, there are also players who like to adapt to the demand – and for them, a nerd on reddit has now created the perfect database.
A user on reddit wants to restart his guild with a few friends before the new expansion of World of Warcraft. They want to try new classes – but which ones should they choose?
The user goes by “ItsACrunchyNut”, describes himself as a nerd, and likes to choose his class based on what is currently needed. To find out the demand, the WoW tool wowprogress helps him. On the site, guilds can manually specify which class they are currently looking for.
The proud nerd claims he could have simply searched through a few guilds and seen from the demand what is needed – “But I’m a nerd. Why do something simple when it can also be complicated?”.
Together with a nerd colleague, “ItsACrunchyNut” conjured some IT magic and wrote a program to evaluate the demand from about 4,000 guilds that have already downed the last boss in the raid (Achievement: AoTC).

The most sought-after PvE classes and specializations in Patch 9.2
“ItsACrunchyNut” didn’t just look at the classes in his evaluation, but also at the roles and specializations (As of: 10.05.22 / via reddit.com). The numbers are estimates from the user:
- Most sought-after roles
- Ranged DPS: 20,100
- Melee DPS: 12,800
- Ranged Healer: 5,200
- Melee Healer: 3,900
- Tanks: 2,400
- Most sought-after classes
- Druid: 6,100
- Priest: 5,100
- Shaman: 2,600
- Most sought-after specializations
- Balance Druids: 3,900
- All Warlocks: 3,600
- Shadow Priests: 2,600
For an overview of all classes, “ItsACrunchyNut” also created a graphic, divided into classes and roles:
How were the data generated? Guilds can enter their player needs on “wowprogress” and specify how high the demand is – high, medium, low. For a “high” demand, the user set 4 players needed, for “medium” 2, and for “low” 1 player.
Thus, “ItsACrunchyNut” created a numerical database that can be represented in a diagram.
His evaluation is therefore based on estimates and is not very accurate. However, for a representation of the class and role demand of over 4,000 guilds, the chosen method is well-suited.
The nerd uses his IT magic to create exciting results that are actually helpful in class selection – if you like to look at the demand and adapt.
If you are absolutely unsure which classes with which specialization to approach, such mathematical approaches are often helpful.
