New MMOs and MMORPGs are still coming from South Korea, and they are not just for mobile. As NCSoft announced, 4 new games for PC and consoles are currently being developed – presumably referring to the PS4. Names and release dates have not yet been disclosed. However, they intend to develop more for consoles in the future.
MMORPG specialist NCSoft has announced 5 new mobile MMOs. Among them are titles like Blade&Soul 2 and Aion 2.
This disappointed MMORPG fans here who are hoping for games for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. But a day after the mobile event, NCSoft promised to cater to PC and console gamers in the future.
Note: The information in the article comes from the South Korean site “gamemeca” and the power of Google Translate.
4 games for PC and consoles
This is what NCSoft says: At the mobile event, NCSoft was asked if they are now only making mobile MMORPGs. They denied it.
NCSoft says this specific event was only for mobile, but they plan to continue developing for PC and consoles. At an event the next day, more information about the other games in the pipeline was provided.
Currently, 2 new titles are being developed in South Korea and 2 more titles in the USA, which are expected to be released for PC and consoles.
NCSoft will develop all non-mobile games for PC and consoles in the future
NCSoft’s CFO said: In recent quarters, PC games have been in high demand. They will continue to announce these games and prepare for the next few years.
It is said further: All non-mobile games from NCSoft will be aimed at consoles and PC simultaneously in the future.
Which consoles are meant? NCSoft does not specify this. It can be assumed that the PlayStation 4 is definitely included – perhaps also the Xbox One or successor consoles of these systems.
Whether the new games will also run on the Nintendo Switch is hard to say. In 2017, NCSoft gifted all 3000 employees a Nintendo Switch and Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Back then, it was already claimed that NCSoft wanted to enter the console market. Actually, Blade & Soul was also announced for the PS4, but there have been no updates on a PS4 port for Blade and Soul for two years.
What kind of MMOs and MMORPGs are these? NCSoft does not specify the titles. However, it is known that NCSoft has been developing the game “Project TL” for years. It is expected to be released in 2019. Project TL is the unofficial Lineage 3 – an action MMO in isometric perspective.
The other games could be:
- “Project A2”, which could be some sort of Aion 2
- “Project LLL” – nothing is known about this yet.
- a yet-to-be-announced online/console game that is likely being developed by NCSoft West.
Are there any release dates yet? At the conference, nothing was said regarding this. However, it is known that Project TL is actually slated for 2019.
The last bastion for PC MMORPGs holds firm
This is the situation: While no new AAA MMORPGs have been developed in Europe and North America since 2014/2015, South Korea has persistently held out as the last bastion of the MMORPG. Something from South Korea has always made its way to Europe and North America. Recently titles like Black Desert or Bless. In the future, probably a Lost Ark.
Yet even the last bastion has crumbled recently. In Korea and other parts of Asia, the mobile hype has exploded. For years, mobile MMORPGs have been produced there en masse, making developers in Asia rich.
Recently, MMORPG specialist NCSoft announced 5 new mobile MMORPGs. All 5 are based on the company’s well-known PC franchises, but all will only be available for mobile. Apparently, there is still room in the mobile boom for PC and consoles – at least with NCSoft.
