At E3, the upcoming sandbox MMORPG Dual Universe was presented, which could indeed compete with Star Citizen.
Dual Universe offers much of what Chris Roberts’ Star Citizen aims to provide: You are traveling in a vast, persistent universe and can seamlessly land on planets. You engage in space battles, but you also have to try to survive on the planets. However, Dual Universe aims to go one step further: You can not only build structures and entire cities according to your specifications, but you can even customize your ship from various modules.
A Vast Universe
The magazine PC Gamer introduced the game during the E3 Show and also showed a trailer that gives a glimpse of the game’s scale. The video seamlessly zooms from space to a planet. Finally, you jump into a character and explore the vast world with them. Now you build your ship, get in, and smoothly fly into space, zooming past a cruiser and heading to the next planet. There, you seamlessly enter the atmosphere, fly between the buildings of a player-built city, and land on a hill.
Jean-Christophe Baillie, CEO of the development studio Novaquark, explained during the show that it has always been his dream to create an MMO where everything should be possible. You should be able to do what you want and build what you want and where you want. You will collect resources on the planets and build houses, ships, space stations, and entire cities from them. All players are in the same universe at the same time and interact with each other. There are no instances or loading screens.
It Is Your World
The economy will also be determined by the players. For example, if someone builds a particularly effective ship that everyone else wants, they can become rich in the universe. There should be wars that disrupt the balance in the galaxy – all of this will be determined by the players. The developers do not want to intervene here. You can start your own companies and influence politics. Every player starts on the Ark ship, and from there, players spread out and experience their own stories.
Even though the pre-alpha already provides a good and polished impression, as seen in the video, there is still a lot of work ahead for the developers. A closed alpha is planned for early 2017. In a few weeks, the community website will launch, where you can already create a character and establish an organization.
