The German content creator ohnePixel is known for focusing on skins in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in his videos on YouTube and in Twitch streams. He recently pointed out in a post on Twitter that an anonymous Steam account with some of the most valuable skins of the tactical shooter, worth over 2 million US dollars, has been hacked.
What was stolen? The German Twitch streamer ohnePixel posted on Twitter yesterday, June 21, that the Steam account of a CS:GO skin collector had been hacked. However, it is not known who is behind the stolen account, which is known under the alias ‘HFB’.
During the hack, skins of the tactical shooter worth over 2 million US dollars are said to have been sold or transferred.
According to ohnePixel, the collection is one of the most valuable inventories of all time. It reportedly includes some skins considered legendary. The following skins are cited by ohnePixel as examples of the stolen content:
- Souvenir Dragon Lores
- no-star Karambit
- #1 Blue Gem Karambit
According to Dexerto, the #1 Blue Gem Karambit alone is worth 1.2 million euros. This shows how valuable skins in CS:GO still are today, which is likely partly due to the fact that the e-sport title is still among the top 10 free-to-play shooters of 2022.
Steam as a Savior in Distress?
What is Steam doing about the hack? During the Twitter thread, ohnePixel pointed out that approximately half of the skins were sold quickly, while the other half remains on the hacker’s account. Furthermore, ohnePixel offers to connect Steam with HFB to expedite the resolution of the incident.
The Twitter user @CrystalChrisYT meanwhile pointed out that Steam Support seems to be manually banning those who bought one of the stolen items.
As Twitter user @zipelCS noted in a tweet, the stolen items would apparently also disappear from the buyers’ inventories. He speculates that Steam is reverting the transactions.
Below are the Twitter threads from @ohnePixel, @CrystalChrisYT, and @zipel:
What is the significance of skins in CS:GO? In the tactical shooter, many players and collectors like the content creator ohnePixel place a high value on skins and are willing to spend significant amounts for their favorite skins. Just in April 2022, a player demonstrated how slim the chances are for rare items when he revealed what was in loot boxes totaling 200,000 €.
But while many CS:GO players are disappointed and do not receive rare skins, one of the biggest streamers in the world was unaware of just how lucky he was while opening loot boxes when he pulled extremely rare weapon skins.
