Some players hold on to their MMO forever, even when it’s hardly fun anymore. Do you belong to these people? Why do you hold on to the games?
MMOs are constantly changing. Every few weeks or months, a new patch is released that could fundamentally change the game you’ve loved for years. While developers usually have the best intentions, change always means that part of the player base might be alienated.
But not all players follow the logical step of simply leaving a game when it no longer brings them joy. Some remain loyal to the game – no matter how little fun it brings.
You can always read about such people in the trade channel, where they complain that “World of Warcraft is just not great anymore” and in forums you read that “Destiny 2 has totally flopped” – yet they diligently post every day in the game. Because they cannot break free from it.
This is why we want to know from you today: Why do you stay with an MMO that actually no longer brings you joy? What keeps you around, even though the game is merely annoying?
Cortyn says: I rarely manage to stick with a game that really annoys me. When games like WoW (but also Dead by Daylight) are no longer fun after a patch, I give the game a few days.
What initially seems like a terrible deterioration could actually be an improvement that I just do not perceive as such right away. But if the game fails to convince me, then only social reasons help: role-playing or the shared fun of playing, such as in dungeons or raids.
But enough about me, let’s get to you! Do you cling to MMOs that annoy you? If so, why? Is it the hope that it will change again in the future? Is it the habit of a game that you simply can’t leave? Are it the fellow players?
