Once again, the week is coming to an end and we want to discuss various topics of the MMO world with you. We pose the question to you and to ourselves about what kinds of characters you usually portray in online games and why.
The Dilemma of Choice
The selection in today’s world of MMOs is virtually endless. Should I play as a man or a woman? Do I want to cast spells or rather slash with a sword? Do I want to be able to heal or just deal damage? Should I create a human or something more exotic? Is my character good or evil? Am I playing a young or an old hero?
Often, only a few seconds are spent on these questions, if at all, and the decisions are made instinctively. Today, we want to ask you to reflect on your characters and think a little about what led you to shape your heroes the way you did!
Cortyn says: Before I faced the question, I actually thought, “What a stupid question, I play what I feel like.” However, I took the time to log into the various accounts and found some commonalities.
I mostly play female characters and, with a few exceptions, they belong to the subjectively “beautiful” races, such as Blood Elves, Castanic, Twi’lek, or Aurin. A second parallel is the fact that all my characters can theoretically heal – but I hardly ever do. In SWTOR, it was a Sith Sorceress, in WoW a Shadow Priest, and in WildStar an Esper, and most of the time the good ladies did a lot, but definitely not healing.
Like all roleplayers, I cannot help but think about my character. Even if I don’t plan in detail, a certain backstory always develops, and those can be categorized into two extremes: Either my characters are desperately “good” and want to satisfy everyone else, or they are completely hedonistic, intriguerous, and prefer to pull the strings from behind the scenes rather than get their own hands dirty.
What can one conclude about me from this? I have no idea, you tell me!
What kinds of characters do you play and why? Let us know in the comments and discuss actively!
