Everything used to be better! That’s why we’re asking you today: What exactly was better about games back then?
Although video games have only been around for a few decades, they have already changed rapidly multiple times. From text-based games to the first “Super Mario” titles to gigantic MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, the gaming field has grown increasingly vast.
Over the years, games have also evolved. Almost all single-player titles now rely on automatic, regular save systems, and things like “perma-death” have become rare, occurring almost only in survival games or Dark Souls.
World of Warcraft continues to face criticism that social aspects are slowly disappearing from the game and are mostly only present among heroic or mythic raiders, while the rest of the players fight anonymously through the group finder.
But many fundamental mechanics and modes of many games have also disappeared. So-called “split-screen” games are becoming increasingly rare, and which games still offer the chance to play with multiple people in front of one computer?
Games have changed, and much from the past has disappeared.
Let the breeze of nostalgia wash over you, remember your “wild gaming youth,” and let us know what you miss in today’s games!
Cortyn says: I miss when games were finished. I don’t necessarily mean that games come to market without bugs, but that they simply have a point where they are “finished” and no new content comes – no new content, no DLC, and no special skins that are only available if you liked Facebook page X or shared tweet Y. When I start my “Super Smash Bros.” on the N64 today, I know the game is still exactly as it was 15 years ago. I miss that kind of consistency in modern games, even though I know that it doesn’t bind customers and revenue decreases.
Basically, I think that not everything used to be “better,” but just different. Even today, games do many things right – but some things will probably always be missed.
But enough about me, let’s turn to you! What do you miss in current games? Which elements did you really enjoy in the past that are rarely seen today?
