How much money do we spend in InGame shops?
Rejoice, for once again we have completed a week and can focus on our shared hobby: Playing MMOs. In the past, you would buy titles for 70 DM and then have two months of unrestricted fun. With today’s payment models, however, that’s hardly possible anymore. In almost every game, some form of real-money shop awaits, where well-off players can spend their savings to make their time in virtual worlds even more enjoyable.
Whether special mounts, various boosters, impressive costumes, or character skins in MOBAs, anyone wanting to spend more money will find every opportunity to do so. Yes, people in Germany don’t talk about money. That’s why we limit ourselves to writing and want to know from you: How much money do you spend monthly on MMOs? What things entice you particularly, and what would you never buy?
Cortyn says: My spending on MMOs fluctuates quite a bit. I get a bit uneasy when I look at my transaction histories for the various games. When I think solely about World of Warcraft and just the basic subscription fees, it adds up quite a lot. Almost 9 years of paying 13€ each month – Brr, let’s not think about that, as at least the time was filled with fun.
In contrast to these fixed costs, I often find myself falling into specific traps with a lot of buildup. Special skins for characters I really like quickly push me to spend 5€ or 10€ on something I regret within the next half hour. Especially in games where you first have to buy a “exchange currency” (like NCoin, jewels, or diamonds) I quickly lose track of the money. That’s probably the desired effect, because with “5€” I can almost see the banknote in front of me – but what are 240 jewels worth?
EP boosters or any form of “Pay2Win” items are never on my shopping list. The gamer honor within me prevents me from buying such things – or rather the simple fact that I avoid Pay2Win games.
When I add everything up at the end of the month, I’m still quite satisfied with myself. It’s rarely more than 40€, then a new MMO must have been released that I want to have immediately.
