Pokémon GO was the hit in summer 2016. But what about 2017? Does the augmented reality game still lure you outside or is the excitement over for you? Mein-MMO wants to know!
The “Pokésummer of 2016” was a phenomenon. Wherever you looked, there were whole hordes of people from all walks of life and age groups out and about, trying to catch little virtual monsters with their smartphones. Whether bank managers, students, or retirees, they all chased the little creatures in remote corners or stood in large groups around popular PokéStops or gyms.
The most curious scenes from the Pokémon year 2016
We all still remember curious scenes from the year 2016. For instance, an expectant father who had to catch a Pidgey in the delivery room. Or a bridge in Düsseldorf that was closed due to the many Pokémon players, so they could play in peace. Or a mass surge in Central Park in New York after a rare Vaporeon appeared there.
However, there were also less pleasant scenes, such as a body found during a Pokémon hunt or cunning rogues who stalked unsuspecting and distracted Pokémon players at PokéStops at night. This was accompanied by car accidents because drivers played instead of paying attention to traffic and even deaths after players fell off cliffs in their hunting frenzy.

For me, the summer of 2016 was an absolute exception. I usually prefer to stay at home rather than take long walks. When I go out, I mostly head to pubs, festivals, or beer gardens. However, in 2016, I gladly went the long way around and took a big walk around the block every evening to search for more Pokémon.
And everywhere I met like-minded people, with whom I immediately struck up conversations. Most were people I would never have approached otherwise, and they probably wouldn’t have approached me either. Pokémon brought us all together.
But what about now? After a year, Pokémon GO is better than ever and has been equipped with new features such as the improved gyms and raids. But is the hype still there?
