This weekend we want to start again with a question for you: How long do you play an MMO? Are you loyal until the end or do you move on at the first sign of boredom?
The Burden of a Large Selection
There are now MMOs like sand by the sea. While the term was previously used synonymously with MMORPGs, many games with an online component now count as such. Whether it’s World of Warcraft, Destiny, or Heroes of the Storm, all these games belong to the MMO market, each with their strengths and weaknesses.
Yet hardly any game manages to truly engage the core gamer of today for a long time. The competition is growing too quickly, with too long gaps between various content updates. Again and again, there are people who hold on long and stubbornly to their favorite, even if the game actually bores them. On the other hand, there are many gamers who never commit to a game and disappear again after two weeks.
We want to know from you: How do you handle this? Do you stay long with a game, or does the search for something fresh always push you to the next download?
Cortyn says: “Back then” I was a loyal soul. For a long time, there was only World of Warcraft for me and nothing else. When no content patches were released for months, I set my own goals in the game to keep myself entertained. No matter what I set my mind to, sooner or later I achieved it in the game. Reverent in Darnassus? Two weeks of hard work! Cleaning Scholomance with two people? A month of preparation! For many years, WoW was my “main game” and aside from some matches of Warcraft 3 at LAN parties, there wasn’t much else there.
Today, that has changed. I check in on WOW for two months, then put it aside because I get bored (and no longer enjoy doing “useless” things). Then I play HOTS intensively for a week before switching to SMITE, and then briefly checking out WildStar before dropping it for TERA.
In the beginning, I even felt a little guilty for neglecting my once favorite game. Summarizing, it can be said: Yes, I am now an MMO hopper and pop up where there is something particularly exciting.

But now let’s get to you! Are you loyal to a game? Or do you pick the content cherries from each game and switch wildly back and forth? If yes, why? If no, why do you stick to this one game? Let us know in the comments!
