Magic: The Gathering is a popular collectible card game that has been increasingly collaborating with well-known franchises in recent years. MyMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen is particularly excited about one edition.
I only got into the card game Magic: The Gathering about 5 years ago. The trigger was a deck full of cat cards that I received as a gift and still use against other players today. The very first editions that came out around 31 years ago in Magic simply did not interest me at first.
However, in recent years, more and more interesting editions have been released that came with well-known franchises. As a gamer and fantasy fan, there are many universes where you can buy collectible cards, including:
- Fallout
- Assassin’s Creed
- The Lord of the Rings
- Tomb Raider
Recently, I jumped on the edition “Wilds of Eldraine” because the fairy tale theme really captured me. And as an anime fan, I couldn’t let the Secret Lair editions of Hatsune Miku pass by without notice. But soon, there will be the very first gaming edition for which I am already saving up 200 euros.
Final Fantasy XIV will soon have a mobile version:
My favorite MMORPG will soon be available in Magic
Magic: The Gathering has announced a new edition based on the Final Fantasy franchise. This is a JRPG series that is among my favorite video games. All 16 parts of the main series are supposed to be immortalized in card form. Final Fantasy XIV holds a special place in my heart, as I have already accumulated numerous hours of gameplay and beautiful memories with the MMORPG.
I love the game so much that I even ordered clothes related to the MMORPG from an Australian clothing store. They have now arrived, and I must say that I am very satisfied with them.
Today it was announced that there will be 4 Commander sets for Final Fantasy. These are special decks built around a Commander. And when my eyes saw that the sorceress Y’shtola will be one of the commanders, it was clear to me: My wallet will suffer.
Y’shtola is one of my favorite characters from my favorite MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. She is a rational-thinking sorceress who has often helped the group move forward in their adventure with her plans and ideas. I like having her around, just like Alisae, which is why I chose her for a special scene where one member of the group visits our character.
The Commander Lead of the set, Daniel Holt, also explained in an interview with IGN why Y’shtola is simply the perfect choice as Commander:
With Y’shtola, it was about a combination of the character’s popularity and the fact that she is a sorceress. Her story and character development offered a wide range of abilities and moments from which she could lead the deck.
The Commander deck is meant to showcase her moments from the FF14 expansion Shadowbringers, which happens to be my favorite expansion of the MMORPG. Here, the Warriors of Light faced Emet-Selch, the main antagonist of Shadowbringers. He is arguably one of the most iconic villains of the franchise, so I absolutely need to secure him as a card. However, it is still unknown whether he will be in Y’shtola’s Commander deck or separately in the boosters.
I also really like the playstyle of the deck. It is supposed to be a deck that operates without strong creatures but relies heavily on spells. Perfectly fitting for a sorceress like Y’shtola.
Saving until the release
In addition to Y’shtola, the 99 other cards of the Commander deck should be filled with characters known from the game. This includes heroes, supporting characters, and villains from the MMORPG. The makers have not yet revealed which ones they are, but I want them all. Not necessarily for a deck, but I want to collect the cards at least to enjoy them.
In addition, Yoshitaka Amano is responsible for some card designs. He is probably the most famous artist from Final Fantasy, as he is responsible for the iconic logos and some character designs. The logo of FF14 also comes from him.
No wonder I have to have every card from the Final Fantasy expansion. I am already planning a budget of around 200 euros – about 80 € for the Commander deck with Y’shtola and 120 € for a display that contains several boosters of the expansion. Regular Commander decks usually cost around 50 euros at launch but can become significantly more expensive depending on their popularity. Therefore, I am planning 30 euros as a buffer.
What the final price of the expansions will be is not yet known. However, I already know by when I need to meet my savings target: The edition will be released on June 13, 2025.
My wallet actually needs to recover from another purchase, so I can use the time to save now. I actually built a gaming PC, even though I have no clue about hardware. A tool helped me a lot with this: For my gaming PC, I only went by aesthetics because I have no clue about hardware
