MeinMMO author Maik Schneider is evolving into a professional camper stressor in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. One of the new gadgets plays a major role in this – the drilling grenade.
Head glitches, poorly visible corners, or any room with a door (so all) – campers can sit anywhere, and unlike in real life, they do not introduce themselves with a friendly “Good morning” while smoking delicacies on their grill.
However, over time, you become familiar with the popular spots where tents are often pitched. In the past, you had to go on endless paths to smoke out the camper nests – now a targeted throw with the drilling grenade is sufficient.

CoD MW2: Drilling Grenades – Unexpectedly High Range
If you throw a drilling grenade at a wall, the device tries with all its might to reach the other side. An explosive body then drops out, which explodes on the next contact. The explosion is about as strong in terms of range and damage as a fragmentary grenade.
If the grenade cannot drill through, the following happens:
- The device goes off right there where you attached it
- The grenade drills a few meters into the wall and then jumps out sideways
- The grenade goes deep into the wall and explodes with little damage in the middle
Generally, I’m always surprised how thick the walls can be. The drilling grenade can easily overcome several meters, not just thin particle boards:
The wall here on the map “Mercado Las Almas” can be drilled through its entire length. That’s about 3 meters.
Furthermore, the drilling grenade throws itself like Thermite – a very flat, powerful flight curve. With that, you could hit your target safely even from great distances. Once the grenade touches its target, it automatically adjusts itself and begins its penetrating work.
CoD MW2: Drilling Grenades – Function in All Directions
Don’t feel restricted by the angle or nature of a wall.
The drilling grenade is not picky: it drills through walls, ceilings, floors, sloped or flat surfaces. Try it a little, and you’ll be surprised at what the grenade can penetrate. Sometimes, however, you may also be disappointed because not everything works after all.
Also, make use of the property that the drilling grenade jumps out sideways from walls when you place it on thick walls. Throw the grenade at the edge of the wall to clear a path or tunnel.
CoD MW2: Drilling Grenades – Stick like Semtex
The flight curve is not the only thing the drilling grenade borrows from its relatives. While it flies like Thermite, it also sticks like Semtex.
This can be extremely helpful in stressful situations because the drilling grenade can also be thrown very quickly. If an enemy catches you off guard, you often get the grenade out in time and score the kill with a direct hit.
Moreover, you also have an excellent tool against vehicles here. Whether tank, Humvee, or combi – the drilling grenade eats through paint and armor to the driver’s cabin, taking out the driver and passengers in one blow.
Keep in mind that the drilling grenade can not only leave a nasty hole in walls.
Safety Note: If the surface is not suitable for drilling, the drilling noise sounds different, and you have the visual explosion warning directly on your screen. If you can’t get away, you might even go down from it.
Therefore, keep a respectful distance from the drilling grenade if you are unsure whether you can penetrate the surface.
