Gearbox/2k: Borderlands 3
Publisher 2k has another horse in the race with Borderlands 3. Although it has not yet been officially announced, the head of Gearbox has already hinted that they are currently working hard on Borderlands 3.
There is currently even less known about Borderlands 3 than about Red Dead Redemption 2, but it seems clear: If Borderlands 3 comes, it will take Destiny as a model and rely on online and multiplayer.
Borderlands 3 might have the greatest chance among these titles to compete with Destiny 2 – after all, Borderlands is considered a top game in the “loot and shoot” genre. However, Borderlands 3 has not even been announced yet. The game is likely to be expected only in 2019.

This is the drawback with all these titles: None of them are in the starting blocks. Red Dead Redemption 2 will probably be the first new game to appear in spring 2018 – but it will likely also be the furthest from Destiny and have only minor overlap.
The other three competitors are a year or even longer away. Until the end of 2018, Destiny 2 is likely to remain pretty unmatched in its genre – unless there are more surprises in store for us.
One thing is clear: The cake that Destiny 2 is currently devouring alone is so delicious and plentiful that other publishers are already ready with plates and forks.
