Every fourth German internet user spends their leisure time playing multiplayer games. eSports is also increasingly on the rise and brings together a large audience.
The Federal Association for Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) announced the results of a survey about gaming behavior in Germany in a press release. Participants were mainly asked about multiplayer games and eSports. In 2023, questions were asked and the results were extrapolated.
Multiplayer shows the social component of games
The BIU found that playing together and against each other in games is very popular. Over 18 million German internet users aged 16 and over play multiplayer games. Of these, 8.4 million prefer to play online against others, while 4.7 million prefer to be in the presence of their fellow players and like to be in the same room.
The remaining 4.9 million play both online and on site with others. Players use platforms such as PC, stationary and portable consoles, and tablets or smartphones.
Playing together and against each other is one of the oldest cultural and learning techniques of humanity, explained the BIU managing director, Felix Falk. Competitive and cooperative games would bring this technique back into the everyday lives of millions of people. The multiplayer aspect shows the social component of games.
eSports now attracts a large audience
The importance of the multiplayer mode becomes clear when looking at the eSports trend. Through live streams and in person, a million-strong audience now gathers to cheer for their favorite teams and players. Thousands of viewers regularly attend the competition arenas. eSports is defined as playing computer and video games in leagues or tournaments. Often, prize money in the millions is at stake for international competitions, and the popularity of this sport is also increasing in Germany.
eSports is particularly popular among young people
It is noticeable that eSports has a higher level of awareness among younger internet users. Every fourth respondent knows about eSports; among those aged 16 to 24, every second knows what eSports is. The younger age group also more often watches these events online or directly in the arena.
The most important eSports games include multiplayer games: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Dota 2, FIFA, and Overwatch.
