HORI offers a licensed set of mechanical keyboard and mouse for the PS4. PC feel on the console is now possible. But is it really necessary?
It is considered a widely accepted truth that in shooters, mouse and keyboard controls have advantages over analog sticks. Depending on the settings, you can react faster, move more quickly, and aim more precisely. On console, these disadvantages are partly balanced out by aim assist.
To bring this PC feel to the PS4, HORI has now developed the “Tactical Assault Commander Pro” (TAC Pro), a PC controller designed for the PS4. It may be surprising that Sony allows such hardware, but it is an officially licensed product.
What can the PC controller for the PS4 do?
TAC Pro consists of two components:
- A keyboard with 20 mechanical keys: The keys are marked with the symbols of a DualShock controller, such as X, O, or L1. There is also a stick on the left side. Additionally, an adjustable wrist rest is supposed to provide the necessary comfort.
- A mouse with 3200 DPI: The sensitivity can be adjusted. It features a scroll wheel and side buttons.
The set is fully programmable. You can create up to three user profiles that save the key mapping and sensitivity settings.
Additional advantages in combat are provided by the snipe and quick button. The snipe button reduces sensitivity for increased accuracy. This should allow for even more precise aiming when sniping. The quick button is designed for fast aiming and quick movements.
Reviews are generally positive: the quality is convincing. The set does exactly what you expect it to do. However, detailed settings are needed in advance to ensure that the mouse and keyboard work in a way that suits your playstyle. Additionally, it takes a little time to get used to the hardware.
The movements in shooters are not as smooth as on PC, even with the TAC Pro. This is probably simply due to the fact that PS4 games were designed for analog sticks.
In the end, the question arises as to who the set is actually suitable for. If it is important for you to play with a keyboard and mouse, you likely already have a PC for gaming. On the other hand, analog sticks offer a unique gaming experience that many console gamers do not want to miss.
