In Destiny 2 there has been speculation about Cayde’s successor for 2 years. For many, only his murderer Uldren is a candidate – but he could even get a much more important job.
Uldren is back in Destiny 2, whether you like it or not. Many players wish the currently wandering NPC known as Crow nothing but the worst and find the prevailing theory that he is to take over the succession of Cayde-6 terrible. However, suddenly the even more important job of the Speaker is in the running.
This is the backstory: The Forsaken story began in 2018 with a bang: the fan-favorite, space cowboy, and charming rogue Cayde-6 died. His murderer was Prince Uldren. At the end of an epic quest for revenge, the Guardians were able to confront and deal with Uldren (who exactly fired the fatal shot is not 100% clear).
Later, Uldren awakened as a Guardian, the Traveler gave him a new life but stripped him of all memories.
This is what happened now: Now, 2 years later in Season 13, we encounter Uldren again. He is now called Crow, is redeemed, and our ally. We rescued the “new” character from the clutches of the shady Spider and forgive him, accepting him into the ranks of the Guardians.
For many, it’s only a matter of time until he becomes the leader of the Hunter Vanguard. Numerous allusions from characters like Zavala, the “Vanguard Dare”, and Destiny lore have hinted at this for years.
On January 12, 2021, players could now enter a new area that gives the story of Uldren/Crow a new spin. Here, Guardians can admire a new ship that was forged by the Traveler himself for Crow.
Crow as the Voice of the Silent Traveler
This speaks against Cayde’s succession: Although the prevailing theory is that Crow is to fill Cayde’s vacant position, there are also several arguments against it:
- Crow has no experience as a Guardian and especially not in leading others. The experienced huntress Ana Bray, who has been gaining more narrative focus from season to season, would make more sense.
- The decisive “bet” may be null for some. Because Crow has nothing to do with Uldren anymore. We, the players, also have nothing to do with the lives before our guardianship.

Moreover, Uldren killed Cayde. But Uldren is dead, he no longer exists. Before us stands Crow, who is not Uldren and therefore also not Cayde’s killer, and thus not a worthy successor according to the lore.

Therefore the new Speaker: The Speaker informs the Guardians and inhabitants of the Last City about what the god-like orb in the sky has to say. In 2017, the Speaker was tortured to death by Ghaul. His last words were that even he could no longer hear the Traveler. Since then, the position has been vacant, and the Traveler has been rather silent.
- Shortly before Beyond Light, things picked up: Our spherical Guardian seems to have awakened from his slumber, as the darkness has arrived in the solar system.
- Crow speaks of his dreams sent to him by the Traveler. The golden falcons that we find in the missions around Crow and Falcon’s Crest also come from the Traveler.
- Finally, the Traveler has given Crow a ship – such attention from the usually silent Traveler is very unusual.
- The Traveler seemingly brought Crow back to life for good reason.
Crow could perform this job even without experience as a Guardian. He seems to have a special connection to the power of Light. Especially regarding the darkness that tempts the Guardians with Stasis, the Traveler seems to want to play a more active role again. After all, everything points to the great battle between Light and Darkness in 2022.
