Mordhau has already proven to be a huge success for the indie developer Triternion shortly after its release. However, its popularity is currently the crux of Mordhau, as the influx of players is causing difficulties.
This is how successful Mordhau is: After its release on April 29, Mordhau has risen to number 1 in the worldwide bestseller list on Steam. (As of May 1 at 12:00, via Steam)
Since then, according to Steamcharts, over 25,000 players have played Mordhau simultaneously with an average player count of 16,807 players.
Mordhau is also doing well on Twitch. In the past three days, Mordhau has had up to 87,400 viewers simultaneously, placing it at number 9 in the “Peak Viewer” category.
This is the problem with success: The influx of players is currently causing issues for the servers. There are frequently very high pings and sometimes very uneven matches, where players can hardly play properly due to the poor connection.
Actually, up to 64 players should be able to play together and against each other in Mordhau’s largest standard mode “Frontline.” However, since many people have been complaining about connection issues, the developers have currently reduced this to 48 players. The server structure is also causing many players issues in connecting with groups. It frequently happens that a group finds a server, but some players cannot connect because there is not enough space.
Are there any other problems? Yes. Currently, some bugs are still circulating. Many fans complain that they receive neither experience nor gold after completing a match. This error is already known, as Triternion confirmed on reddit and they are working on it.
Experience points increase your account level, allowing you to buy new and different weapons and armor with the gold you have obtained. The developers promised that there would be compensation for the currently unreceived experience and gold.
How good is Mordhau? Currently, the reviews for Mordhau are “mostly positive.” 76% of the total 2,158 reviews on Steam give a thumbs up. (As of May 1 at 12:00)
Players often praise:
- the great graphics and performance
- the challenging yet great gameplay with realistic weapon handling
- the dismemberment of body parts
- the progression system with gold and EXP, which many similar games like Chivalry lack in this form
The negative reviews, on the other hand, primarily criticize exactly the problems that Triternion is currently working on. There are often complaints about teammates, as “Friendly Fire” is active and some players are reportedly often killed by friendly fire.
