The German streamer Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris ranked second among worldwide streamers on Twitch in September. With a mix of FIFA 20 and gambling, he surpassed many shooter players. While their games like Fortnite struggled, MontanaBlack seems to be crisis-proof.
What numbers are we talking about? We are talking about the “viewed hours” in September 2019 on Twitch. These numbers are publicly accessible in contrast to the subscriptions. Tracking sites keep an exact account of these numbers.
The month was overall weak for the streaming service Twitch. According to StreamElements, “only” 777,585,685 million hours were viewed – significantly less than in August, when 932,145,894 hours were watched.
Twitch still remains by far the strongest streaming service and was able to increase its market share in Q3 2019.
MontanaBlack has loyal fans and FIFA 20
What is MontanaBlack doing? MontanaBlack is in a strong second place worldwide for viewed hours:
- MontanaBlack had 6.4 million viewed hours in September (via sullygnome). That’s 81% more than in August.
- MontanaBlack was live for 131 hours in September – an increase of 50%.
- The streamer broadcasted a mix of FIFA 20, the gambling category Slots, along with some Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty. Sometimes MontanaBlack is also seen in “Just Chatting”. On average, nearly 50,000 viewers watch him whenever he goes live.
MontanaBlack: Viewed hours rise by 81% in September
Why is MontanaBlack so high up? MontanaBlack has risen by 81%, while nearly all other top streamers on Twitch lost viewers in September.
Shooter games like Fortnite or Apex Legends had little to offer in September. Moreover, there was no new major hit.
While games like Borderlands 3, FIFA 20, or Ghost Recon Breakpoint were released in September, there were no real “Twitch hits” – even though MontanaBlack was able to use FIFA 20 well for himself.
US streamers might not care much about FIFA – in the USA, soccer is not as popular as it is here.
MontanaBlack has the most viewers when he plays “Slots”. There, he sits at a blackjack table playing hand after hand or pulls at virtual gambling machines.
Twitch and competitors lose – MontanaBlack wins
MontanaBlack’s strong performance is partly due to the competition struggling for individual reasons:
- Tfue, who was number 2 in August, took a long break and fell out of the top 5. He lost 62% in September.
- xQc lost 20% – the former Overwatch pro lacks the right game at the moment. He is mainly found in “Just Chatting”, where he reacts to videos.
- Shroud (-10%) played primarily World of Warcraft Classic during the first half of September and then couldn’t keep up with MontanaBlack. Shroud expected to lose viewers.
Since there was no real trend on Twitch in September 2019, and MontanaBlack apparently has loyal fans, he was able to perform strongly and secure the second place worldwide.
This is certainly a sign of the growing role of the German audience on Twitch, especially when offering them a tailored mix of football and “gaming” and serving it with a personal touch:
MontanaBlack’s style seems to resonate well, entertaining fans. He appears authentic – surely due to his tumultuous life. He even turned his story into a book titled “From Junkie to YouTuber”.
Asmongold wins WoW Classic and Twitch
Who is number 1? The clear number 1 on Twitch in September was Asmongold, who rode the wave of “WoW Classic” and “won” the game on Twitch.
With over 13.3 million hours, Asmongold (via Sullygnome) is by far the strongest streamer in September.
He was online for 222 hours in total, solely in WoW Classic – so he really put in the effort. On average, 60,000 people watched the self-proclaimed WoW nerd.
WoW Classic already stirred things up on Twitch in August. This impacted September as well.
