The devilish Diablos is troubling many hunters in Monster Hunter World. The beast has a variety of attack patterns that are difficult to see through. Our guest author and Monster Hunter veteran “Taffyme” has written a guide with weaknesses and tips that will help you defeat the Diablos.
That’s why Diablos is so challenging: The Diablos is an aggressive flying wyvern that primarily attacks with its horns and from underground. It often attacks with its running attack (or charge) or burrows underground. Even though it has wings, it only uses them to escape from a pitfall. The horned devil does not use its wings to fly.
Another treacherous attack from it is its Double Head Swing, which it swings broadly to the left and then to the right. Additionally, the Diablos has a body check and a double tail swipe.
These attacks are executed rapidly in combinations by the Diablos, making it difficult for many hunters. With this guide, you should be able to defeat the beast.
Location: In these areas, you can find the Diablos
The maps of Monster Hunter World are divided into different areas. It is useful to know in which areas the monsters are most common. Quests are often time-limited, and you want to find the monsters as quickly as possible.
In this section, you will learn where you can find the Diablos and in which areas it resides.
- Wildspire Waste
- Areas: 13, 14, 8, and 6 – The Diablos is mostly found in areas 13 and 14.
If you are fighting Diablos for the first time, you will find it in the Wildspire Waste in area 8. A video sequence will then play automatically. After that, you will land in area 13 and have to fight against the Diablos.
The lower screenshots indicate the areas where the Diablos is marked red.
Areas 13 and 14 – Here is where the Diablos is most often found.
Areas 8 and 6 – If you are fighting the Diablos for the first time, you will find it in area 8.
Weaknesses of the Diablos: Elements, Status Effects
Monsters have their special weak points, and the Diablos is no exception. Here you will find a list of the Desert Beast’s weaknesses.
Elemental Weaknesses:
- Fire – Resistant (0)
- Water – Medium (2)
- Thunder – Low (1)
- Ice – High (3)
- Dragon – Medium (2)
It is advisable to bring weapons that have the element of Ice added. Fire, on the other hand, is weak against the Diablos.
Status Weaknesses:
- Poison – Medium (2)
- Sleep – Medium (2)
- Paralysis – High (3)
- Explosion – Medium (2)
- Stun – Low (1)
The status paralysis is particularly effective against the Diablos.
Vulnerable body parts and quick tips:
- The tip of the tail is very hard and the worst attack point you can choose.
- The wings are the best spot for ranged attackers to deal the most damage.
- You can break the head twice. The number of breaks is indicated by the broken horns. If both horns are broken, the head has also been broken twice. Blunt weapons like the hammer deal the highest damage to the head. The hammer and the great sword are recommended weapons to break the horns.
- The chest, abdomen, and back are the weakest points for all melee weapons like the great sword or dual blades.
- The burrowing and subsequent digging attack of the Diablos is its strongest attack. You must definitely evade or block this.
- The Diablos does not attack with any elements or status effects. Armor with high defense is recommended.
Tips and tricks for defeating the Diablos: The battle with the beast
The following section summarizes some tips for defeating the Diablos. It also provides hints on how you can use your surroundings in battle.
Avoid long combos, prefer single strikes
The Diablos is extremely fast despite its size, and getting stuck in a long attack combo can cost you the victory. Here, the Diablos has time to catch you with the charge. Therefore, single and targeted strikes on its weak points are recommended.
The chest, or rather the abdomen, is particularly vulnerable. You should execute your attacks here. Also, the Diablos can attack you more heavily when you are underneath its abdomen.
Thunderbugs incapacitate the Diablos
When you strike the thunderbugs or shoot them with a ranged weapon, the bugs die and create a bright flash. Monsters are momentarily disturbed by this and become temporarily immobile. It is easiest to shoot the bugs.
In area 13, there are some flying thunderbugs. If you are the target of its charge attack, you can use the bugs to prevent the charge. If the Diablos burrows itself and flies up to escape from a pit, you can use a thunderbug or a thunder capsule to bring it down. This would also prevent a second burrowing.
Tip: The Diablos must stand still to break its horns. The thunderbugs are also suitable for this.
Use free-standing rocks to pin the Diablos down
If there are no thunderbugs left in area 13, you can stand in front of the free-standing rocks. When the Diablos charges at you, it will ram its head into the rocks and get stuck for a short time.
Put away your weapon immediately when the Diablos digs
When the Diablos digs, put your weapon away immediately. With your weapon sheathed, you are faster and can evade its digging attack more effectively. In Monster Hunter World, dodging always comes first. The last damage you want to deal with your weapon is less valuable than your health.
Also, pay attention to the tracks in the sand! They indicate which direction the Diablos is moving, allowing you to evade faster.
Scream capsules catapult the Diablos out of the ground
Scream capsules produce a loud noise that startles monsters. They are made from scream bags, which you can farm from the small flying dragons Noios. These also live in the Wildspire Waste (Area 8).
Wait until the Diablos is completely buried, then throw a scream capsule in its direction. This will throw it out of the ground, and the Diablos will become temporarily stuck in the ground. Be careful! The scream capsules do not work when the Diablos is enraged.
The flying dragons Noios can be used to disrupt the Diablos
Alternatively to scream capsules, the Noios can also be thrown with stones, or ranged attackers can shoot them once. The flying dragon then briefly loses altitude and starts to scream, which lures the Diablos out of the ground. This would also require you to fight the Diablos in area 8.
If the flying dragons are screaming while the Diablos is right below you or under the flying dragon, it will dig itself out from the marked pit. The Diablos will then leave a hole that pulls everything underground.
Sand dunes, rocks, and flying dragons are suitable for jumping on the Diablos
You can also use the flying dragons to ride on the Diablos. To do this, you must hold down the L2 button and aim at the flying dragon, then press the circle button. You should now be able to hang on to the flying dragon and reach the back of the Diablos.
The different heights of the rocks and sand dunes in the Wildspire Waste are also suitable for jumping on the Diablos. To do this, you have to be higher than the monster and jump on it with an attack.
Or use a group member to catapult you onto the Diablos. This hunting group demonstrates how you can throw each other onto monsters.
Watch in which direction the Diablos looks after its charge
When the Diablos is enraged and charges at you, always pay attention to whether it is still looking at you after the first charge! Then there is a high probability that it will turn around and charge again.
So be prepared to evade or block if the Diablos looks at you intensely again. It would look like this:
The tired Diablos – What you need to watch for in the den
If the Diablos is tired from the fight and retreats to its den (Area 14), it will utilize the sandfalls. Remember two things for the sandfalls:
- If the Diablos runs into the sandfall on solid ground, it will dig to you and burst out of the ground.
- If it digs underground towards the sandfall, it will shoot out of the sandfall and pull everything along its path.
In both cases, you should immediately put away your weapon or simply block with your equipped weapon.
Catching the Diablos – Traps should only be placed under its feet
If you want to catch the Diablos and not kill it, you should consider the following:
- Traps should only be placed directly under its feet. Otherwise, there is too high a risk that it will dig under the trap and destroy it.
- Alternatively, you can also place the trap when you see that it is preparing for a charge and you are far enough away from it. As soon as the trap is laid, back away immediately to prevent unnecessary damage. The Diablos will then charge directly into the trap.
