Monster Hunter World will have its Steam release on PC on August 9th. For a smooth start, we have compiled a collection of guides and information for you to ease your entry.
What is Monster Hunter World? Monster Hunter World is an action RPG where you take on the role of a monster hunter. You have no magical powers or abilities. Only your equipment determines how strong you are and which monsters you can defeat.
The story of the game takes a backseat. At its core, you will spend a lot of time hunting monsters to obtain better materials. From these, you forge better weapons and armor to face even stronger monsters.
What makes Monster Hunter World special? It is the fifth main installment of the franchise. The centerpiece here is the living ecosystem, where you hunt the monsters. You can use your environment to bring down dams, causing massive damage to monsters with torrents of water. This is new in World and creates an impressive atmosphere.
Tips for a successful start: What you should know at the beginning
Below, you will get a brief explanation of the most important points in the game. This will be supported by our MHW guides that help you with your first hunting steps and beyond.

The Weapons – You have 14 Classes to Choose From
There are 14 weapon classes that can be further developed: Just like with armor, you can forge different weapons from monster parts and various materials. There are 14 base classes, and you upgrade and adapt them to your style in the forge.
Try out all weapons in the training room: You can swap weapons at any time or stick with one for a while. It’s entirely up to you. A training room is available where you can test every weapon and build at your leisure.
Take your time at the beginning to find at least one weapon you are comfortable with and that you enjoy using. It makes the entry much easier.
Weapon keys can be freely assigned: Also, remember that you can freely assign keys on the keyboard and mouse, and the default settings shouldn’t hinder your weapon choice.
Here are the 14 weapons:
- Great Sword
- Long Sword
- Sword & Shield
- Dual Blades
- Hammer
- Hunting Horn
- Spear
- Gunlance
- Morphing Axe
- Energy Blade
- Insect Glaive
- Light Bowgun
- Heavy Bowgun
- Bow
Here you will find a complete list of weapons and additional information about the different damage types and advantages of individual weapons:
New Armors are unlocked through new materials
There are more than 80 different armors: As soon as you find a new material, be it from monsters or nature, a new armor reveals itself in the forge. You can then see what materials you need to craft it.
You can mix armors, and you should: All armor pieces are combinable, and often better stats can be obtained by mixing sets. This can be painful for many “Fashion Hunters” because the combinations usually don’t look very good.
For beginners, the Bone Armor is recommended: You will find bone piles all over the maps and also receive bones from gutting monsters. You can forge bone armor pieces that are strong and easy to farm at the beginning. You can also equip them with so-called “Armor Spheres” to make them stronger. This way, you can survive well in the starting areas.

The Monsters have Fixed Patterns – Observe and Learn Them
Each monster is an MMORPG boss: The monsters appear realistic and even engage in territory battles. Nevertheless, each one has a certain rotation of moves with different phases.
When you encounter a monster for the first time, take the time to observe it. Keep your distance and just watch what it does. Soon you will recognize the patterns and know how to react.
Monsters have a rage mode: Be especially cautious when the beasts become enraged. They usually become faster, more aggressive, and have a visual indication.
Guides to Monsters: For some tough opponents, we have created guides for you. The Anjanath is particularly interesting for beginners, as it is the first hurdle in the game.

There are no levels in the traditional sense, but the Hunter Rank
You do not get stronger through your Hunter Rank: The Hunter Rank (HR) symbolizes your experience and abilities as a hunter. The higher the rank, the more quests are available to you.
There are High Rank and Low Rank: The quests you can complete with a High Rank differ in level from the “Low Rank” quests. The difficulty is indicated by stars, which are found in the quest description. From High Rank onwards, new armors are available, which are divided into Alpha and Beta.
There are Hunter Rank limitations: The Hunter Rank caps are lifted by completing certain story quests.

Monster Hunter World is a Hardware Hog on PC
Even strong hardware can have performance issues: Many tests have shown that Monster Hunter World heavily strains PC hardware. Especially CPU loads trouble many computers. Patches have since been released that at least prevent crashes now.
However, there are a few tricks you can use to directly improve performance:
