Monster Hunter World will be a loot-craft grinder that is likely to appeal to Destiny players. In an exclusive interview, we learned more from the developers about the core gameplay of the action RPG.
On the occasion of the exclusive PS4 beta of Monster Hunter World, we conducted an interview with:
- Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto
- Director Yuya Tokuda
- and Executive Director & Art Director Kaname Fujioka
The mainstream outlet “The Verge” had drawn a comparison between Monster Hunter World and Destiny. It stated, “Monster Hunter World is a cross between Destiny, Dark Souls, and dinosaurs.” We also noticed that many Destiny players on Mein MMO are showing interest in Monster Hunter World.
At its core, Destiny and Monster Hunter World are dungeon crawlers where two principles stand above all else: loot and grind. You defeat enemies, receive stronger items for it, and can use those to defeat stronger foes – from the stronger foes, you get more powerful loot!
The heart is loot and grind!
- In Monster Hunter World
- You become a hunter who takes down dangerous creatures. The monsters can be carved and will drop materials like horns, scales, or claws. Hunters forge weapons and armor from these, allowing them to kill or capture stronger monsters. The respective equipment also determines which skills are available to the hunters.
- In Destiny
- You step in as the Guardian of Light against various alien races such as the Cabal. For defeated foes and completed activities, you earn experience points. Over the course of the story campaign, players level up in Light until they reach the maximum level of 20. Alongside that, there is also the Power Level. To increase this, you need ever better equipment.
What is Monster Hunter World? The fascination explained for interested players
We spoke to the developers at Capcom about the comparison between Monster Hunter World and Destiny and wanted to hear their opinion on it.

In Monster Hunter World there is no level-up
Mein-MMO: Destiny is one of the most popular franchises in our community. Some people see parallels between Monster Hunter World and Destiny. What is your opinion on this comparison?
Tokuda: “The concept of collecting loot from slain enemies to improve one’s equipment is certainly similar. Therefore, I believe that Destiny players will find it easier to acclimate and get excited about Monster Hunter World.
However, a major difference is that there is no level-up in Monster Hunter World. Skills are part of the equipment, which makes the equipment a particularly important aspect of strengthening your character.”
Fujioka: “I believe that Monster Hunter World provides a unique feeling when collecting loot and that it offers more variety in gameplay. Generally, you decide in advance which equipment you want to craft and consider which parts you need for it. Only then do you go hunting for the relevant monster.
Depending on the parts you need, you may have to capture the monster instead of killing it or you might need to sever certain body parts during the hunt.”

“We will not change the heart of the game”
Mein-MMO: Bungie has changed some core elements in Destiny 2 to make it more accessible for newcomers and casual players. The goal was to expand the player base. In retrospect, this upset a large part of their hardcore community. Some of your hardcore players fear that the same will happen with Monster Hunter World. What would you say to them?
Tsujimoto: “We have made a lot of changes in the game, but always kept in mind that we are developing a Monster Hunter game at its core. We are confident that our veterans will be thinking while playing: “This is a true Monster Hunter game!”
Don’t worry, we just want to give players who are completely new to Monster Hunter a gentler introduction than has been the case in the past. We will not change the heart of the game and it is still the Monster Hunter that you know and love.
