For Monster Hunter Wilds, things were actually going quite well at the beginning of the year. Great reviews and good player numbers promised one of the biggest hits of the year. But less than half a year later, things look very different on Steam. Players are frustrated.
How is Monster Hunter Wilds doing on Steam? At release, Monster Hunter Wild was doing well: On Metacritic, it had a score of 90 and it was also a bestseller on Steam. Now, not even 6 months later, everything looks significantly more negative.
Recently we reported that reviews on Steam are becoming increasingly negative and it seems that nothing is changing in that regard. Currently (as of: 21.06.2025, 09:42), only 18% of the recent reviews (over 9,400) on Steam are positive. Thus, the game is rated in the range of Extremely Negative
, and with all reviews included, it falls to Mixed

Comparing Wilds to its predecessor, one notices that Monster Hunter World (via SteamDB) had nearly 26,000 players in the last 24 hours, almost 10,000 more on Steam than Wilds (via SteamDB) in the last 24 hours (as of 21.06.2025, 09:45).
Criticism is mainly directed at technical aspects such as performance, copy protection, or graphical issues. But other aspects of the game also receive criticism.
Players criticize not just technical issues
What else is criticized about Monster Hunter Wilds? In addition to the technical issues, there is also criticism of the content and the game itself.

Even as a big MH fan, I stopped playing shortly after the release because there was simply nothing to do. I didn’t even invest that many hours, the game just wasn’t great.

However, there are also voices that find the many negative reviews a bit too harsh, even though they understand the points made. On x.com, Shincry writes that he finds the extremely negative reviews a bit too harsh, but he can certainly understand why they arise.
@BR_Opossum (x.com) believes the criticism of the performance is warranted, but does not quite understand the criticism of the content: I think the discussion about missing content is a strange discussion considering that every game had a very large content drought at its initial release, and we are 4 months in.
Even the predecessors received criticism
What is behind the criticism? While the criticism of the performance and technical problems on PC is quite valid, one must look more closely at the criticism of the content and difficulty.
Wilds is, like World, easier than its predecessors because it is more accessible. The attack animations of the hunter and the monsters allow for more mistakes, and focus attacks are a good way to deal a lot of damage. But one must not forget that veterans also have more experience, making it feel easier.
Regarding the content, it must be said that some people have already complained about World (via GameFAQs) and Rise (via Reddit) that there is too little content. Only with title updates and major add-ons did significantly more, but also significantly harder content come to the games. One must not forget that Wilds is only a few months old.
Will Monster Hunter Wilds be able to recover? At the end of June, title update 2 is set to be released. In addition to new monsters and harder versions of them, the weapons are to be adjusted.
