In Pokémon GO the special research “Modular Investigation” starts tomorrow morning, on March 20th, bringing the new mysterious Pokémon Genesect into the game for the first time. We will tell you whether purchasing the research is worth it and what you can look forward to.
What kind of special research is this? This is a paid special research that you can purchase for €8.99 in the in-game shop.
As a reward, many prizes await you, and at the end, you can even catch Genesect before it becomes available in EX Raids.

When does the event take place? You will have access to the special research starting tomorrow morning, March 20th at 8:00 AM local time. You can complete the special research until March 26th at 10 PM local time. So you have a full 6 days.

Additionally, there will be special field researches that include Pokémon like Panzaeron, Sichlor, Nincada, and Schilterus. Generally, this revolves a lot around Bug and Steel-type Pokémon, as those are also the types of Genesect.
How does it work with the coronavirus? Due to the coronavirus, people are advised not to leave their homes in many places. Niantic has responded by adjusting the tasks so that you can complete everything from home.
How much they have restricted the special research in this regard remains to be seen. Especially the field researches cannot really be secured if one does not go outside.
This event runs during the special research
What it is about: Also starting tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM local time is an event focusing on some types of Pokémon. It will be available until March 23rd at 10 PM.
What bonuses are available? Even those who do not go through the special research can still benefit from many bonuses for free:
- Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, and Ice Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, such as Houndour, Schneppke, or Magnemite
- Steel and Bug-type Pokémon will appear in raids
- Nincada will appear in the wild and in 5 km eggs and will also be available as Shiny for the first time
- Laukaps and Schnuthelm will hatch more frequently from 5 km eggs
- Double Stardust for catching and hatching Pokémon
How good is the event? Double Stardust is always worth it. It remains to be seen how good the spawns actually are and whether you will have a chance at rare Shinys.
Pokémon like Houndour, Schneppke, and Magnemite have already been mentioned by Niantic. So there is certainly hope.
However, one must also keep the coronavirus in mind. Even if the bonuses are enticing, it is better to stay at home. There you also have the chance for rare shinys thanks to free incense.
Is it worth buying the Genesect event ticket?
Reasons for it: The early chance to get Genesect is quite exciting and likely the biggest reason to purchase it. EX Raids are currently canceled, so you won’t have a chance to get Genesect from special raids anytime soon.
In addition, you will receive a level 15 Genesect from the special research. This will have under 1500 CP and is thus ideal for the Ultra League. A Genesect from an EX Raid always has more than 1500 CP and can then only be used in higher leagues. However, Genesect is a really strong attacker in the Ultra League.
The items you receive during the special research would also cost some euros, so you don’t really make that much “loss” here. In return, you get some useful items.
Reasons against it: In the end, you only get things here, except for the medal and the avatar costumes, that you can ultimately also obtain for free sooner or later.
If you can wait a bit, you will also get Genesect later in an EX Raid. The other items can be purchased with daily coins.
Furthermore, you cannot fully utilize the event as you might have typically done. The coronavirus significantly restricts playing, and if you don’t just want Genesect but also wanted to complete some field researches, you will have to cut back significantly. Nevertheless, it must be noted that you should be able to get Genesect easily from home.
Keep in mind that there is currently a risk of infecting yourself and others with the coronavirus.
