Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has shown gameplay from its mysterious multiplayer for the first time. However, some fans were not convinced and are worried. This is what the developers say about it.
This is what many fans have been waiting for: On July 11, it finally happened. The 2019 reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare publicly showcased gameplay from its mysterious multiplayer for the first time.
For over an hour, 4 well-known content creators from the CoD scene were able to play a special mode from the multiplayer part in a stream. Thus, anyone interested could get an initial impression of what players can expect from fall onwards.
What was showcased? The mode played was Gunfight. The streamers engaged in fast-paced, hectic duels in a 2vs2 format on three different maps designed specifically for this mode.
The mode played out differently than most (Face-Off in MW3 was similar), compared to what players are used to from Call of Duty. Besides better weapon animations and impactful sounds, it quickly became apparent that some familiar features such as class selection or creation, auto-heal, and the mini-map were absent in this mode.
Instead, there were some new features to see, such as executions, where you can eliminate an unaware opponent from behind with a knife.

That’s why some fans are worried: Not everyone was convinced by the presentation. The showcased gameplay was praised by many, but during the stream, some fans noted that this new multiplayer mode did not really excite them. They hope that it is not representative of the entire multiplayer experience and that more content is on the way.
Some characteristic aspects would be missing. The gameplay would be too different from the usual experience in the multiplayer of the series. A true Call of Duty feeling simply has not yet emerged, according to the criticism of some fans. They would prefer a more traditional experience.
What do the developers say about fans’ concerns: The criticism did not go unnoticed by the developers of Modern Warfare. To address fans’ concerns, the lead multiplayer developer of Infinity Ward, Joe Cecot, quickly spoke up on Twitter.
There, he answered a fan’s question about whether the rest of the multiplayer would play the same way or if there would be a more traditional experience. Because the new mode is not really his style.
Joe Cecot replied that there would definitely be a traditional multiplayer. This was just a taste.
Fans apparently won’t have to wait too long for more information. The full official presentation of the multiplayer mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to take place on August 1. By then, fans should know exactly what to expect from the multiplayer part of the reboot.
This is how the Gunfight mode works in the multiplayer of Modern Warfare 2019:
Having now gained insight into the Gunfight mode for over an hour, we now know how this new format works. This is what makes Gunfight special:
- You play exclusively 2 vs 2
- The maps for Gunfight are designed specifically for this mode
- 3 maps are already known: King (Warehouse), Pine (Forest area), and Stack (Container yard in the desert).
- There is no class selection or creation. The loadouts are fixed and change every 2 rounds
- After the match begins, you have 40 seconds to decide the outcome. If there is no winner after 40 seconds, a flag appears that must be defended for 3 seconds to win. If neither team succeeds, the team with more remaining total health wins.
- Each player starts with 100 health, so 200 per team.
- There is no auto-heal or any other healing possibility.
- At the top, the combined health of both teams is displayed, so you can see how much damage has been dealt and how much health your team has left.
What do you think of the Gunfight mode and the gameplay shown from the multiplayer? Does it make you want more?
