A modder shows on reddit how he can play the MMORPG Elder Scrolls Online on his Nintendo Switch. But you shouldn’t try this at home, as it has several complications.
Elder Scrolls Online is one of the MMORPGs that we at MeinMMO would like to see officially ported to the Nintendo Switch. However, it may still be a while before that happens.
A modder has now presented in the ESO subreddit how he can comfortably play the MMORPG on his Switch (via reddit.com).
While it looks really cool, the modder has gone an unofficial route that is not entirely straightforward and is also not recommended for every user. We at MeinMMO explain what the user did and why we advise against it.
ESO on the Switch is complicated and not recommended for everyone
In the official ESO subreddit, the modder “Gadaaavo” showcased his Switch with Elder Scrolls Online. The post has since received over 1,500 upvotes and more than 100 comments.
In response to several questions about how he did it, “Gadaaavo” explains his process. And it’s not that straightforward:
- First, he installed homebrew on his Switch and then installed Android.
- In a second step, he downloaded the Xbox app on his Switch.
- He can now start and play Elder Scrolls Online on the Switch via Remote Play.
So he’s not installing the game directly on his Nintendo Switch but is using the remote function of the Xbox app.
“Homebrew” is risky on the Nintendo Switch
Here’s why it’s not recommended: With the installation of an external system, there are multiple risks involved:
- On one hand, there is always the risk that when you modify your Switch system, you could “brick” the console. That means you would render the console’s software unusable. A repair is possible, but not easy.
- On the other hand, there is a certain risk that Nintendo could detect the modification and ban your console and your Nintendo account from all major Nintendo services. For this reason, the modder bought a second console specifically for homebrew, which he only uses offline.
- Additionally, any possible hack and installation of homebrew only works with certain firmware versions. This is because certain security vulnerabilities (exploits) are being exploited.
We at MeinMMO generally advise you to stay away from such tricks. The risks outweigh the actual benefits – even if ESO on the Nintendo Switch certainly looks cool.
This way, you can also install operating systems and programs that are not intended by the manufacturer. Using homebrew is not illegal, but as soon as emulators and pirated copies are used, it quickly becomes problematic.
