Final Fantasy XIV – An epic dragon saga
This is what it’s about: In Final Fantasy XIV, dragons play an important role in the Heavensward expansion. The story and the war between the dragons and the nation of Ishgard are at the center of the expansion and bring many surprises and exciting twists.
What role do dragons play in Final Fantasy XIV?
In Final Fantasy XIV, all dragons descend from the primal wyrm Midgardsormr. He came from another star at the beginning of time and brought seven eggs with him. From these hatched the seven great dragons. Their names are:
- Azdaja
- Bahamut
- Hraesvelgr
- Nidhogg
- Ratatoskr
- Tiamat
- Vrtra
Midgardsormr and his children have influenced the history of FFXIV over the millennia and were involved in some very important events.
Bahamut and Tiamat were involved in the war against the Allagan Empire and were overwhelmed by their superior strength. Bahamut was then imprisoned as a primal in the artificial moon Dalamud, and many millennia later triggered the 7th Calamity, which marks the start of FFXIV: A Realm Reborn.
Nidhogg and the Thousand-Year War
This is what happened: The power of the dragons lies in their eyes. They are powerful sources of aether, the life energy in FFXIV, and hold immense magical power. Therefore, these eyes are coveted treasures and were the reason for the war between the dragons and the nation of Ishgard.
The war has lasted for 1000 years, and the true reasons for the conflict are kept secret from the citizens of Ishgard. The player character arrives in the city as a refugee after a series of dramatic events that make him or her a fugitive and offers help in the fight.
However, it quickly becomes apparent that not everything is as it seems. Players find themselves in a web of lies and intrigues that involve not only the highest houses of Ishgard but even the head of state himself. And it is necessary to uncover these lies.
Final battle with the black dragon
This is the grand dragon scene: The battle against Nidhogg and his hordes reaches its climax towards the end of the Heavensward expansion. There, after some dramatic scenes, it finally comes to the great duel with Nidhogg, and the dragon is defeated.
Nidhogg’s eyes, however, continue to spread harm even after his death. They fall into the wrong hands and eventually lead to the summoning of an even more powerful primal at the end of Heavensward.
Fun Fact: Nidhogg is also a dragon from Scandinavian mythology who continuously gnaws at the roots of the World Tree Yggdrasil.
