Neverwinter – In the realm of Dungeons and Dragons!
This is what it’s about: Neverwinter is built on the world of the legendary tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). Since dragons are already included in the name, they must surely also not be missing in the online game Neverwinter. Although dragons are usually foes here, they receive two expansions that focus solely on them.
What role do dragons play in Neverwinter?
As is customary in Dungeons and Dragons, dragons in Neverwinter are usually enemies. The giant lizards often accumulate magnificent hoards, making them a magnet for hero groups and their swords and death magic.
Additionally, many dragons in the D&D world cause significant damage and behave as if the world belongs to them. From a great dragon’s perspective, orcs, elves, humans, and dwarves have little say. They are merely fit to be slaves or snacks.
Dragons as super foes
These are the special features: However, there are also “nice” dragons that help the mortal races and stand by their side. Most dragons that you encounter in Neverwinter are clearly enemies and wait at the end of high-level dungeons for you. So true to the game name: Dungeons and Dragons!
Fun Fact: In an April Fool’s joke in 2014, the developers seriously announced playable dragons that could progress from a small mini creature to a towering monster.
Tyranny of Dragons, a whole campaign just about dragons!
This is what the campaign is about: In the fourth Neverwinter expansion “Tyranny of Dragons”, everything revolves around dragons. Although fire-breathers previously appeared as bosses in various dungeons, the campaign specifically focused on dragons and a cult that worships them.
During the campaign, you battle the dragon cult and later encounter real dragons that the cult sends into the field. Altogether, you can defeat 5 special boss dragons throughout the campaign:
- Charthraxis: This is a poisonous green dragon.
- Vartilingorix: This black dragon breathes acid.
- Merothrax: A white dragon that fights with ice effects.
- Venfithar: This is a blue dragon that attacks with lightning.
- Vilithrax: This dragon is a “Dracolich,” an undead wizard-dragon.
At the end, a red dragon named Lostmauth awaits you. Red dragons are among the largest dragon types in D&D, and therefore the beast offers a spectacular final battle.
Five dragons at once!
This is the super dragon: However, after the end of Tyranny of Dragons, the dragon hunt continues. In the following expansion “Rise of Tiamat”, the dragon goddess Tiamat herself emerges and is the final boss of the campaign.
Tiamat is the goddess of all dragons and has five heads. Each corresponds to a common dragon type. Thus, she can use the abilities of all dragons, such as the fire breath of the red or the acid of the black.
So if you like to fight against dragons as final bosses, you can’t go wrong with Neverwinter!
