Square Enix has succeeded with the second attempt of the MMORPG Final Fantasy 14, which still functions very well despite the subscription model that is no longer so popular with players today. Just like World of Warcraft, the focus is on quests and exciting stories. Group play is incredibly important, as most content can only be tackled together as a team.
Final Fantasy 14, with its many DLCs and the two expansions Heavensward and Stormblood, tells an epic story revolving around a war between the nations of the continent Eorzea and the long-standing Dragonsong War.
You are the legendary heroes of light playing a significant role in these wars, and in Stormblood you will be drawn into another adventure, during which you must save the land of Ala Mhigo from the conquerors of the Garlean Empire.
All of this is told through numerous exciting quests. Additionally, you will encounter many other adventures in side missions.
Final Fantasy 14 also offers PvP, which takes place independently from the story in special areas/arenas. FF14 excels with classic gameplay and boasts very active players who are eagerly anticipating every new update and expansion.
Note: The aesthetics are different from WoW. In addition, intensified grinding elements and bland side quests might deter WoW veterans.
Conclusion: Final Fantasy 14 represents the Asian counterpart to World of Warcraft. Just like in WoW, quests and story take center stage. The high numbers of active players prove that a subscription model can still work today in a good MMORPG. Here, you can expect a real alternative to WoW that can even be played on the PlayStation 4.
