Entrepreneur Herman Narula has now opened a studio in Edmonton with his company Improbable. Former BioWare developers are working on an online RPG there. However, Narula seems to have his sights set on MMORPGs in the long run. He aims to forge new paths.
This is the situation: Entrepreneur Herman Narula built the company Improbable around the cloud technology “SpatialOS”. His company is already worth over a billion US dollars after attracting investors.
Currently, he has opened a studio in Edmonton, Canada. Traditionally, this is the headquarters of BioWare.
At the moment, a team of about 40 people led by BioWare veteran Aaryn Flynn is developing an online RPG for Improbable, but Narula likely has bigger plans, as revealed in an interview with Game Informer.
This is what Narula says about MMORPGs:
“When you look at MMORPGs, there are so few in development, even though they generate a fifth of all revenue in the industry.
The industry really has a blind spot there. That’s why we think if we build a team with so much experience, we can aim for that as a goal.”

The idea is to solve “the hard problems” in the studio in Edmonton that plague the genre.
Narula aims to solve the paradoxical problem
This is how Narula sees the challenge: Narula says we need to solve the paradoxical problem that players feel they have significant influence over a world that is predetermined in some ways.
He apparently sees this as the formula for success that online RPGs need to thrive in today’s world.

Empowering players like Fortnite and Minecraft do
This is the background: Narula grew up with games like Neverwinter Nights, which were designed by BioWare and people like Flynn.
He sees the strength of Neverwinter Nights as having so much content created by players themselves.
But how can we bring that into the new era?
Games that are currently successful, like Minecraft or Fortnite, have found exactly this way. They make players feel: “This is your world.” Players have the power to change and influence it.
The gaming industry heavily relies on RPGs and storytelling – but now we need to find a way for RPG and multiplayer to work together.
It will probably take a few more years until we find out if Narula and his team can solve the big problem and create an MMORPG or online RPG that makes the world changeable.
