The YouTuber and streamer Lucky Ghost gives tips in one of his videos on how MMORPGs can be more fun again. According to him, it’s a common problem that players treat their games like jobs. You should do this instead.
Who is Lucky Ghost? The YouTuber is from the USA and has been regularly producing videos about MMORPGs like ESO, New World, Final Fantasy XIV, and WoW since 2019. On YouTube, he currently has 127,000 subscribers and on Twitch, 90,000 followers.
At the beginning of the video, Lucky Ghost talks about his own experiences in the genre. As a child and teenager, he was captivated by them, but later he could no longer feel that passion. He hears the same story from different players over and over.
He then decided to find a solution to the problem himself. Now he gives players with similar problems tips on how to “rekindle their passion for the MMORPG genre.”
Don’t run in the hamster wheel
According to the YouTuber, MMORPGs nowadays are full of “hamster wheels,” disguised as dailies. Players feel compelled to go through them daily, even though they are often dull and repetitive.
The solution: Don’t be a hamster. Lucky Ghost advises players to make it their mission to try new things. Something you’ve never done in your MMORPG. Here are a few examples:
- Level classes you haven’t played yet
- Level traits you’ve never tried
- Explore new areas
- Complete quests you have been putting off
- Farm new mounts and cosmetic items
Those who only do dailies and perhaps find no time for anything else in the MMORPG make the game, according to the YouTuber, their “second job.”
MMORPG players seem to always be looking for the “most efficient” activities and place too little value on whether activities are actually fun. So you have to dare to be inefficient.
Share experiences with fellow players
A common reason for a lack of joy in MMORPGs is a lack of social environment, at least in-game. Guilds disband, real-life friends no longer play, or one switches MMORPGs and suddenly finds themselves alone.
“Sociability means more than we admit,” says Lucky Ghost. Unlocking a rare mount feels much better when you can share your joy with someone.
The solution: If your best MMORPG memories include being in a guild and chatting on Discord, you should dare to look for one. Other MMO players are not “extroverted social butterflies”, so he advises players to just take the plunge and join a guild.
In doing so, you should look out for players who still enjoy the genre and have fun. There are still guilds full of people whose greatest joy is to log into MMORPGs daily and play together with others. “That still happens. But maybe we’ve stopped looking for it because we’ve had it before.”
Play new MMORPGs, preferably right at release
Another problem for many players is the meta-level. Other players and numerous guides have already scouted everything. You just have to read and replicate. This takes away much of the joy of discovery.
Moreover, according to Lucky Ghost, it is a big problem that players cannot detach themselves from their MMORPG. They don’t want to play another, but feel burned out.
The solutions:
- Play new MMORPGs right at release. Everything is still chaotic, no one knows exactly what they are doing, and everyone can discover the MMORPG themselves.
- You can just jump in without researching builds and mechanics beforehand. That is “a hard pill to swallow”, but the truth.
- Play another MMORPG that has been online for longer. And not a clone of the previous one, but something completely new.
If you have tried all kinds of MMORPGs and have been a fan of the genre for years but still don’t have fun with the games, Lucky Ghost suggests that you turn to another genre for a while. Being burned out might mean that you just need a breath of fresh air.
